Subject: Conference Announcement: Allerton 1997

We are pleased to announce the 1997 Allerton Institute:

Story: From Fireplace to Cyberspace
October 26-28, 1997
Monticello, Illinois

The 39th Allerton Park Institute will explore current issues related to
story and storytelling for youth through scholarly presentations, hands-on
workshops, and practical demonstrations.

Emphasis will be on the critical need to connect children with substantive
narrative in order to affect their development as readers, consumers, and
evaluators of literature and information in myriad forms.

Betsy Hearne and Christine Jenkins, of the Graduate School of Library
and Information Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign,
and Janice Del Negro, of the Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books,
have assembled a group of knowledgeable presenters that includes scholars,
librarians, artists, and professional storytellers.

Participants will attend formal sessions, but breaks for informal
discussion and exploration of the Allerton grounds will also be
incorporated. Each evening will end with music and storytelling.

Additional information about the conference schedule, rates, and
registration can be found on our Allerton page at:

http://edfu.lis.uiuc.edu/puboff/bccb/97allerton.html

Or call The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books at 217/244-0324.

Thank you.

I would like to disagree (politely, I hope) with the trashing of The View
from Saturday. I read it long before it won the Newbery, and found it to
be absorbing, intriguing, and very finely crafted. I would booktalk it
in a heartbeat, with an aim to pull in those who love to watch the pieces
of a puzzle fall into place. Interconnectedness, interdependence and the
mutual growth of unrelated persons were themes that were developed
differently than they would have been in a novel that focuses on one
individual, or even one family. Different isn't the same as worse. How
lucky we are to live in a world with the literary equivalents of both
pizza AND ice cream.

Subject: Enforcing Time Limits on Computers

Hello,

As I am the original poster of the plea for help, I appreciate all your responses
to my plea. I am still working on reading your responses, but I
wanted to add one point.

What do you do about preschoolers who can't read yet, and run over and jump
on the computer? That's another cog in the wheel. Some parents don't always
(never?) come over to the computers with them; the parents could sign them up if they came.

I'm not a children's librarian, so I don't know all the tricks of that trade. We just
have one service desk for reference and children's services, and we seem
to keep going around and around on what will work with the computers and
what won't work.

Thanks

ubject: Library overnites

We've made tentative plans for a first-time library overnite. I'd like to
hear from anyone who has been involved with overnites (i.e. sleepovers)
at their own libraries. What went right? What went wrong? What are some
things for us to look out for/ be prepared for?

If the Board approves our plan we will invite 50 3rd-5th graders and their
parents (3:1 ratio of children to parents required). We will serve a snack
at 10:30 and breakfast in the morning in 2 shifts, in the staff cafeteria.
We're planning book & craft activities, an interactive mystery theater
program (no murders), and a bedtime story in the evening. Bedtime is
midnight. What have you done?

I'm looking forward to any advice you may have!

Thanks,

was a lightning strike at some point of the story. Read in in the 3rd grade

I have a patron looking for a book in the "Little Miss" series by Roger
Hargreaves titled _Little Miss Mess_. I cannot find any record of it in our
library system, in Children's Reference Plus, BIP, BIP OP/OSI, Amazon.com.
I have checked other library holdings in Southern Ontario through a CD-ROM
database. Does anyone know if this title ever existed? Is she perhaps
thinking of Little Miss Tidy or Mr. Messy by the same author?

Any leads would be appreciated.
