Subject: Popular Paperbacks

A YA recently sent some suggestions to the YALSA homepage webmaster
with suggestions for the Popular Paperbacks Gay Tales booklist. We
can't update the list, but I promised this young adult to get the
word out to as many YA librarians as I can reach. She was
concerned that some of her favorite books had not been included on
the Gay Tales booklist. I'm reproducing her comments with the book
ordering information.

"I was very impressed with your book lists, and will look into
reading many of the titles mentioned there. However, my three
favorite books were not mentioned, and this fact disturbed me. I
am an avid 16-year-old reader, and I find that books are better if
I can identify with them. Under 'Gay Issues,' I strongly believe
you should include..."

_Entries From a Hot Pink Notebook_ by Todd D. Brown
Pocket Books, $10.00 (0671890840), 1995.
"This book is heart-wrenching and uplifting at the same time. It
is the 'diary' of a freshman boy who knows he is gay and is trying
to find a place for himself in the world."

_The Girl_ by Blake Nelson
Simon & Schuster Trade, $11.00 (0671897071), 1994.
"A similar book, though without the gay themes, is _Girl_ by Blake
Nelson. This book explores many of the important questions in
teenaged life in a realistic manner--not necessarily the
politically correct one."

_The New Girls_ by Beth R. Gutcheon
HarperCollins Publishers, Inc., $13.00 (0060977027), 1996.
"Though the book is rather old, I think the tale it tells is
timeless."

Subject: stumper

Another stumper for you,
A woman remembers a juvenile fiction book from the 1980's about a
woodcarver whose family is killed. He then carves a wooden family to
replace them. A young girl who has seen the wooden figures then sees a
girl who looks very much like the figure of the woodcarver's daughter.
But this girl is really a ghost. The woman thinks that the word "time"
is in the title. Does anyone know this book?

Thanks to all of you who responded so quickly to the stumper about the boy
with low self-esteem who learned to roller skate. It was _The Skating
Rink_ by Mildred Lee. The patron was impressed and delighted by the swift
answer; I wrote it up in our employee newsletter -- here's to collective
memory (and wisdom).

ubject: Books of Knowledge/ Encyclopedia Reviews?

One of our library managers recently asked for a new set of Book of
Knowledge for her branch. Another reminded us that this encyclopedia,
although usefully aimed at a young audience, is really quite poorly done,
with some important topics missing altogether.

Does anyone have experience with the newest edition of Book of Knowledge?
Has it improved? Has there been a good source for encyclopedia reviews
anywhere recently? Do you know of any other well-done encyclopedias aimed
at 2nd - 4th graders?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is anyone aware of a YA romance series featuring African-American main

Subject: RE: Activities for boys

-The annual Chess Tournament always draws more boys than girls in our
library.

-One other program we ran for several years seemed to draw more boys -
We called it the Carnegie Comedy Club and it was essentially an
open mic with the librarians doing shtick to start it off and to
wrap up. We had a portable PA system, even though we didn't really
need it, so they had a real microphone to hold. We had jokes,
stories, even a budding ventriloquist. There were a few
suggestions (for the kids) for preparation.
Prepare several jokes, in case someone else tells one you
were planning to tell
Practice speaking loudly and slowly and looking at the
audience
Have your jokes written down - just in case you need to
review them
No bathroom jokes or words
Many of the kids were very poised and very funny. We held it right
out on the public floor, so a crowd gathered. Several years
it was scheduled on April 1st.

Subject: New PUBYAC Website and other changes

Dear PUBYACkers,

The PUBYAC Web site is now open for business. Here is where you can find
the answer to the question "How do I unsubscribe?" or "How do I get to the
archives?" or "How do I post?" Here is the URL:

http://www.pallasinc.com/pubyac/

Tell your friends, tell the Romans, tell your countrymen. Make links to
this page because there's a lot of old PUBYAC info there in Internetland
that is outdated and just plain wrong.

I'm also using this message to announce that my moderator address is
changing. This does NOT affect posting messages or sending commands to
Majordomo. It only affects you if you need to contact me, your devoted
moderator. The Web page reflects my new address, which is

pyowner@pallasinc.com

You'll notice that my name stays the same, but the domain has changed.
Nysernet remains very willing to continue to host the PUBYAC listserve,
but since they are going slightly corporate, they need to make sure all
their e-mail accounts conform to certain criteria. I don't fit that
criteria. So I'm just moving house. THIS DOES *NOT* AFFECT THE
LISTSERVE, THE ARCHIVES, OR THE DISCUSSION.

I doubt that Nysernet will set up a forwarding address in my old e-mail
account, so you really must make a note that my address has changed.
Otherwise I can't help you, or you'll think I'm ignoring you.

You can always use the new Web page to e-mail me--there are links to me
all over the place. Just click on my address: pyowner@pallasinc.com.

Pallas Inc. is a company that develops custom software for highway
departments, hydro-electric dam engineers, and even Novell. In the
interest of civic duty and pride, they have graciously agreed to sponsor
the PUBYAC web page and an e-mail account for the PUBYAC Moderator.

The changeover to the new moderator account will probably happen before
the end of September. So watch out for a few glitches--these things never
transfer perfectly smoothly.

Let me know if you have any questions.
