ubject: Author Conferences

I want to THANK all of you for your help in starting with our author
visit. All of your ideas were greatly received and we intend to use a lot
of them. NOW, to extend the learning process, we are planning on setting
up a young authors conference. We want the kids to be able to select from
different genres and book types to create a book that they write.
I am looking for a couple of things for this project. 1.) Have you done a
program like this??? What worked??? What didn't??? 2.) We would like to
have various techniques to make the books. Such as weaving the pages
together with string or yard. Do you have any ideas or suggestions on how
to do this???? 3.) and finally we are looking for some places to publish
student work from this advenuture. Any ideas???
I thanks you in advance for all your help and if you could reply to me at:
charvey@pike.k12.in.us I would greatly appreciate it!!!

We will be holding our 3rd annual American Girls Tea Party in March. This
year, in honor of the newest doll, Josefina, I'd like to hold a
celebration with a Spanish flavor. She's growing up in New Mexico in the
1820's. Any Spanish craft ideas appropriate for grades K-4, party games,
etc would be greatly appreciated. I don't know if a pinata would be
appropriate?? Thanks so much! I'll be happy to post responses to the list.

Subject: Khmer Language sources

Hi folks!

I'm looking for sources for Khmer (or Khmer/English) books, for both
children and adults. I've got information from _Pan Asian Sources_, but
that's about all. If you've got another source (with a wider list of
children's materials, hope hope!) can you let me know?

I'll forward the list when compiled, of course.

ubject: SLJ's 60 best books

Last night I got my December issue of SLJ with its 60 best books for
children for 1997. This year, my hit rate was terrible. I'm so
embarrassed, and my director wonders why we did so badly. Some of it is
that there was several YA fiction, which we usually do not buy hardcover.

My question is, how many of the 60 does your library have? (We are
very small, and I assume that most large libraries and systems have most or
all of them.)

If you post your collection size and how many hits you had directly
to me, I will happily summarize for the list.

Quite a while back there was an inquiry about a poem that goes along
with the "bunny ears" method of shoetying. i consulted my best
reference source- an 8 year old patron- and she remembers hearing
it on the Full House tv show. It goes:
Bunny Boy Bunny Boy
Around the ear to there
Go Inside the Bunny Hole
And I'll Show you a pair!

Since the evaluation of poetry is extremely subjective our library
has non-competitive poetry readings. For many people, it
may be their first time reading poetry in public and we want to
encourage their creative spirit. We do not censor the poetry at all
(since it is a public library) and believe me, there have been some
poems with shocking language. If you want to have some kind of
competition, you could have "the funniest poem, the most original
poem,..." so that each participant would be a winner.

Subject: Inaccuracies in non-fiction

Hi all!!

I just have to share this story.....

We got a question at the reference desk: "What is the only land mammal
that cannot jump?" I had heard the answer somewhere before as the
elephant, but my memory being what it is wanted documentation. So we
set out to find it, assuming it was the elephant, or possibly the hippo.
In my part of the search, I came across the book _The life of the
hippopotamus_ by Bradley Smith, copyright 1972, isbn 0-529-04424-2.
The opening sentences of this book are as follows:

"Few animals are as misunderstood as this ungainly amphibian. The
hippo is three to four tons of slow-moving, grass-eating mammal who
sleeps in the water by day and grazes on land at night."

First of all, I didn't know the hippo is an amphibian; second of all,
even if it is, how van it be a mammal too?!?!

This is an example of blatant error, and I find it sad that it made it
past the publisher; even if it was published in the 70's!! Needless to
say, I discarded this one! I also can't believe no one else at the
library caught this before. I wonder how many lids used this for
reports?

Okay. I've ranted.

Thanks!!

Lorie

Greetings all! I am trying to find a book for a social worker to use with
a 7 year old boy. The boy's father is alcoholic - this the boy can grasp.
What he can't grasp is the personality changes he sees in his father,
i.e. broken promises. What's needed is not so much information about
alcoholism but a way to let the boy deal with these changes.
I've checked Bookfinder and more local sources. There are books, just not
any or many for a 7 year old. Thanks in advance for your help.

In addition to books, finger plays, etc., I try to use a good pop-up
book for each story hour that I do with the at risk children that I
work with.It really seem to help them focus on the story and helps
maintain their attention.(I keep these books in a collection for only
teachers and story hours, since they are easily torn.)Does anyone have
the names of some really good pop-up books that you like to use with two
to six year olds?
