Hi we have done face painting on numberous occasions, and have found the
ones that are in the shape of crayons, that you keep wetting in a cup of
water the best and easiest to use. (As a matter of fact, we do
approximately 500 kids in a 1 1/2 hour time frame - using 8-10 librarians
- it is a group effort of 8 libraries) and always seem to work the best.
Just found the box of them - they are called ARTISTS' COLOURS by
AQUARELLE, also listed on the package is NEOCOLOR II. They are Swiss made
and we purchase them from a specialty children's toy store at the Mall,
not sure if LET'S PRETEND is national or not, but that seems to be our
local source. Hope this helps, also they are not the cheapest, but they
tend to last forever.

I'm probably late telling you this, but Grolier's Flags of the World is
reviewed in the May 1, 1998 Booklist on page 1544.

Hi, Steven,
Thanks for sharing that list of books.
The thing that caught my eye, tho, was your last paragraph--
"..my never-enough-on-the-shelf circulating collection of toddler books."

My question is this--do you indeed have your toddler-appropriate
books in a separate collection? If so, tell me all about it. Pros,
cons, problems, success stories -- whatever.
I am very much in favor of separating these books in order to help
out toddler parents as much as possible. What collections comprise your
Children's Department?

Subject: age limits for children's library cards

We are reconsidering our current policy of issuing children's cards to
anyone 11 or under and adult cards to people 12 or older. I am very
interested in hearing from other public library systems about their
policy regarding age limits for children's cards and the underlying
rationale.
Thanks for your help.

I have used Marijo's receipe and it works well. We used cake
decorating food color for more vibrant and interesting colors.
Something else that the kids really are getting into is the really
cool tattoos that can be put on. They don't wash off immediately and
are vibrant, easier and faster to put on than face painting. It
was the most popular booth at a recent school carnival.

Wilson, could you tell us whether you are a librarian or not? You sound
unfamiliar with the extensive literature that exists on this topic. For
example, the two Excellence in YA Services books from ALA, the annual John
Cotton Dana Award winners, and just about every issue of VOYA will give you
ideas on this topic. What worries me, though, is that Bedford thinks this
is just a PR problem. If you are successful in attracting them in the short
term, what is Bedord prepared to do in the long term, and is ALL OF THEIR
STAFF ready for an influx of teenagers?

We have been considering having some sort of "code signal" in case of
emergency, which
one staff member could say or phone to another to get outside help (i.e.
call 911) without
alerting the patrons. We are a small library with no alarm system and
no security guards.
If any of you are in a similar situation and have some procedure in
place, could you share
it with us?

Thanks,

Subject: Successful library funding campaign

Greetings,
A bit of good news for all of you involved in what seems to be
a constant political battle for library funding.
Approximately one year ago, The Village of Endicott, the primary
funder of our library, infolrmed our board that due to IBM pullouts
and tax reassessments, the Village would no longer have the funds
to support the library as of January 1, 1999. After several months
of careful research, our library board voted to become a school
district library.
On May 19th( the date set aside to vote on school district
budgets throughout New York State) the voters in the Union-
Endicott district, where over 65% of our users reside, approved
by a two to one margin the referendum to become a school district
library.
We do hope that eventually County wide funding will solve our
fiscal problems but, meanwhile, it's great to have this vote
of confidence. Lots of hard work for all involved, but well
worth the battle.
