Subject: historical fiction for 6th graders

I have had a request by a 6th grade teacher who teaches an
interdisciplinary social studies and English class. He is looking for
recommendations of good CANADIAN and LATIN AMERICAN historical fiction for
his class. Some of his sixth graders may be reading on a fourth grade
level and others on a much higher level. Most of the titles I have come
up with so far are really at too high a level for his class (House on
Mango Street, Evangeline....). I'd appreciate any suggestions you may
have. Thank you. Rebecca

Subject: macrobiotic cooking

Does anyone know of a macrobiotic cookbook suitable for children? Patron
would like one with pictures and easy to follow recipes for a child 10-12
years old. I am going to try the website for Vegetarian Times magazine
and use macrobiotic as a websearch term but I was hoping someone here
would be familiar with a title rather than giving the patron titles we
have never seen.

Dear Pubbers: Whilst I was in D.C. for a very fine ALA-Annual my
knowledge of trivial but important items was increased. (1) I purchased a
book, "A Woman's Place" (Fulcrum, 1996) written by Norton Juster. It's a
dandy book for those of us interested in the lives of rural women in the
U.S. in the 19th century. It's a reprint of a 1979 Viking title.
So...with Alberic, I become wiser about a really fascinating author. ( I
purchawe purchased itat one of the Smithsonian museum shops.)

At the Nat'l Portrait Gallery, two oil (I think) portraits of baseball
players: artist--Russell Hoban.

The world is full of many surprising things.

Subject: Re: Stumper

Please help. I have a beautiful blond, blue eyed little girl looking for a book she got off the new book shelf two weeks ago (could have been longer). It's about two boys, first day of school, one boy's classroom has a rhino beetle, the other classroom has a decorated tree, one boy's birthday is a special day and the other boy's is just a plain day. The book is red with a square picture in the middle of the boys. Since the book is new I doubt if it is in any book like A to Zoo. If you know the book please help. The little girl is persistent.

Please respond to Dorothy@peabody.whitleynet.org

Thanks to all who respond.
