Subject: A few stumper answers
Of my recent six stumpers, two have been solved:
I received many messages telling me that "Lazy Tommy
Pumpkinhead," by William Pene Du Bois (Harper, 1966)
is about a boy who relies (a little too much) on the
machines in his electric house. Many told me they have
found it an excellent storytime choice for older
audiences.
"Slim Green" is by Louise and Norman Dyer Harris
(Boston, Little, Brown, 1955), which Linda Conroy found
out on www.bibliofind.com. Thanks!
A few of you have "Anna Lavina" on the tip of your
collective tongues...
Thanks to all.

Subject: stumper - 10 baby bears
Hi to the collective memories of the list
We had a patron looking for a book about a Mama Bear, Papa Bear
and ten baby bears. She thinks it is from about 30 years ago and
there is something with it, but she can't remember exactly, that
gave a feeling of strong family ties. It is for a friend of hers
who had a death in the family. Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you,

Subject: Stumper -- adventure story
Hello all - hopefully the collective wisdom of pubyac will be able to
find this book.
The story is about a boy who lives in New York who decides to leave
home and fend for himself. He hunts, fishes and builds a home for himself
in a tree trunk. The book goes into great detail about his
adventures and TELLS exactly how to do all of these things. The patron
read the book about 30 years ago (somewhere in the late 60's), but is not
sure if it was a new book at the time. SHe thinks the book takes place in
the early 1900s.
TIA for any help. Please respond directly to me.

Subject: STUMPER: "Ten league Boots" fairy tale
A customer remembers reading or having told to him about 40 years
ago a story (probably a fairy tale) in which the principal character had
magical "Ten-league boots." Putting these boots on enabled him to take
ten-league strides with every step. There is also some talk among staff
members who can almost remember the story that the setting was in Europe
and he may have been going off in search of his father or other family
members.
We've tried Fairy Tale Index, Denver Public Library, and are
going through our 40+ year old fairy tale collections (he thinks it was
in a collection of stories or fairy tales.). I am hoping someone in
PUBYAC land remembers it more clearly than we can.
TIA.

I just joined PUBYAC. As a new member and library school student, I find the
information a litle overwhelming . I do berlieve it will be helpful at some
point in my career. I am looking for the title of a folktale that I used to
read when I was a child.I believe it was an African tale written at least 40
years ago. The story ended with a tiger chasing it's tail around in a circle
and turning into pancakes.. Does anyone recognize this story. I would
appreciate any help in locating the story.
Please respond directly to me.

"There was a series of books about some kids living in Chatanooga, TN who
solved mysteries. The gang included both boys and girls (even one Native
American) and the TVA figured prominantly - I think the dams were
geographic points of reference for the kids."

Subject: stumper/bunny party & jello?!
Hello colleagues --
Here's a stumper that nobody in our department can recall. From a
four-year-old's memory, the details are:
A bunny and friends have a party, and jello and gelatin molds figure into
the plot.
We believe this to be a recent (within the last 5 years?) picture book.
Catalog and standard sources have been checked, and the book is NOT "Bunny
Party" by Anderson, "Happy Birthday, Little Rabbit", or
"Party Day" by
Jabar.
Thanks for your help - I'll post the answer for other stumped brains!
