A few days ago I posted a stumper about Humphrey the turtle. It seems to
be "Humphrey: One Hundred Years Along the Wayside with a Box Turtle" by
Marjorie Flack. Doubleday, 1934.

I don't know if our ILL people will be able to get hold of it, but now we
can try. Thanks to Mary Peverada, Linda Conroy and Kate Carter for the
information.

Hello,
does this story sound familiar to anyone?
2 kids, british, go to live with an aunt. They think she's a witch because
she goes out at night to collect mushrooms, etc. It takes place in the

similar that may have the word house in the title. 20+ years old.

OK folks - here's a good one for you. A co-worker who does not

picture books about obedience and safety. Specifically, stories of
children being safe as a result of obeying their parents. Kay looked in
The Bookfinder and A to Zoo, and in our catalog under such subject
headings as "safety" and "obedience". So far she's come up with
nothing. I'm not sure there are any books out there on this narrow of a
theme, but if anyone can think of any I'll pass them along.

Christian Fiction for Teens

"Christian Fiction, broadly speaking, is literature that emphasizes
values
based upon a Biblical world view. As a rule, it does not seek to
advocate
specific tenets of individual denominations; rather, it recognizes and
utilizes the larger more universal Biblical doctrines of Christianity as
its basis." Carol Beall. SLJ Sept. 1995.

Subject: Stumper-chapter book

Hello all! I have a patron who would like to locate a chapter book she
read as a child. She is about 40 yrs. old now. Here's what she
remembered about the book:
- -5 sisters, one named Hedy
- -Jewish/Yiddish family
- -set at the turn of the century
- -the front cover had the 5 girls on a staircase. Patron thinks
"stair-step family" is a probable title, but i haven't found anything in
our catalog using these key words.

Does this ring a bell with any of you? If so, please respond directly
to me.
Thank you for your time and efforts!!!

Subject: Stumpers

Once again, I find that I must ask for help from you knowledgeable
pubyacers in identifying some books. All three of the books I am
seeking are at least 25 years old. I have checked BIP, mx bookfinder
and OCLC without success. My e-mail is: jennifer.pepper@state.me.us

The three plots are as follows:

1. A picture book about an eventful day in the life of a character
referred to only as "the man in the striped suit." A chain of events
is set off at the beginning of the story - possibly by the man buying
an apple.

2. Jenny's best friend moves into another apartment building and
meets a new group of friends when she starts going to charm school.
Jenny then sets about trying to make some new friends herself, while
dealing with the fact that her tomboyish, bicycle-riding grandmother
(whose un-grandmotherly like behavior embarrasses Jenny) is moving
into her home.

3. A YA book about a teenage girl with ESP who becomes embroiled in
some kind of plot. One point in the story has a mysterious typed note
being deciphered when it is discovered that the typist did it in the
dark, and had her hands off by one key on the keyboard.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!

I have a patron who remembers most of a story but needs to see the book so
he can storytell it. He thinks its about 4-5 years old, and it might have
the word Reunion in the title. It's about a boy and his grandfather. The
boy is bored and the grandpa starts telling him about "the simple things"
in life, such as swimming in the local water hole or pond. They go
swimming and are somehow transported back in time to grandfather's youth,
where the boy and his now-young grandpa have a wonderful day swimming
together. Day ends, they're back home and their proper ages. I've
checked A to Zoo (4th ed.), and my libraries holdings. I found a
wonderful j fiction about a girl swimming in a Monet painting, but can't
find this one. Patron is sure of the plot and that it's a picture book.
Any bells ringing out there? TIA!

Subject: favorite storytime books

Hello,

I am a new graduate of library school who is now working as a branch
librarian (but my job is heavy on the children's programming!). The recent
discussion of favorite Newbery books got me wondering about everyone's
favorite books to use in storytimes.

So let's hear it...what are your favorite books to use for storytimes (both
with toddlers and preschoolers) that both you and the kids enjoy? You can
post to the list or e-mail me and I'll be glad to keep a list and post the
compilation (or e-mail it to you) if anyone else is interested. By the way,
in the short time I've been in my job I already have a few favorites! Both
age groups seem to really like If... and It Looked Like Spilt Milk.
Toddlers like Go Away Big Green Monster (I have had kids ask me to read
that one again right after I was finished reading it!) and An Octopus
Followed Me Home. Preschoolers seem to enjoy Tom's Fish, The Red Racer, and
Bootsie Barker Bites.
