Subject: Popular fiction series for boys under 10

I've realised we have a shortage of popular fiction series for 7-10 year
old boys. Apart from Goosebumps, which seem to be waning in popularity,
there doesn't seem to be anything for boys. Girls have the Babysitters
little sisters, and Sweet Valley Kids, and I'd like to get something
equally popular for boys.
If you know of something suitable, I'd be interested to hear. Respond to
me directly, and I'll compile.
Thanks a lot

Hello, colleagues! I just got a new assignment that I really like--head
of the children's department in what will be a Huge suburban library. And
I am supposed to make a shelving map. I last did that 12 years ago. Does
anyone know the formula for how many books of various Dewey areas fit on a
shelf? I would be oh so grateful for any information. I know it's
50,000 volumes and I don't yet know the linear feet of shelving.

I think the idea behind the "five finger" method (*giggle* --- note
it's "method" not "discount") is to rule out books that are so far above a
reader's ability as to be unintelligible. If a young reader finds five
words on a single page that they do not know and/or cannot decipher, imagine
how long it would take them to complete even a picturebook satisfactorily.

If I remember right, it's a sliding scale. 0-1 finger, very
easy--maybe at or below level. 2-3 fingers, nicely challenging. 4-5
fingers, probably too difficult to be read comfortably.

Of course, extreme desire to read a particular book will override
any of the "finger factors." *grin*

Hi all,

Sooooo sorry! I didn't realize there would be so many of you who would
want to know the Bend and Stretch rhyme. Anyway, the concensus was that
this is the actual rhyme...you may use a different word here and
there...

Bend and stretch, reach for the stars.
There goes Jupiter, here comes Mars.
Bend and stretch, up to the sky.
Stand on tippy-toes oh so high!

Hope this brings back some happy memories for all my friends out there!

I work for a county system that is a cooperative: there are 12
libraries, we share some resources, mainly our computer system. We are
not branches; some are city libraries, some are private, and one is
county operated. Our YouthServices committee would like to hire a
librarian (we are in the Dream Big stage right now) that is a resource
person and outreach also. I would appreciate hearing from others who
work in a system similar to this, especially if you have a position such
as this one.

Bridgett Johnson requests a good grantwriting source; I work in the
Indiana University Philanthropic Studies Library in Indianapolis, and we
have a few that might come in handy.

_The Grants Development Kit_ by Jacqueline Ferguson is our most often
consulted manual for demonstrations of some grants that have succeeded, as
well as outlines for making one's own. _Writing Winning Proposals_, _Grant
Proposals that Worked!_ are a couple of others we have in the library, but
because many of them are reference materials and do not circulate, we
might not notice them as often.

If you would like to talk to a real pro (which I am not), our head
bibliographer, Dr. Janet Huettner, keeps office hours every Monday-Friday
from 8-5. She can certainly provide you with lots of info -- her doctorate
was in Philanthropy.

Hope this helps,

We have a customer looking for a "poem" that was recommended to her
by a Fire Chief. She wants to use it as part of an article on fire safety
she is writting for a local paper. This is what she knows about it:

possible title is BIG YELLOW MONSTER.
it is a kid's view of a firefighter during a fire.
it encourages kids to go to a firefighter during a fire even if they see
"a monster".

She is looking for something that is "comforting/reassuring for the child.
If you know of a poem that is similar but with a different title, that would
probably work. It is possible it appeared on a poster.

Please send answers directly to me.

Thank you.

Subject: Stumper--Christina and Refrigerator Box

Pubyaccers,

A patron is searching for a book she thinks she read in the late 60s/early
70s. She says it was published by the Scholastic Press Association book club
and was probably a preschool level story. It was about a girl named Christina
or Christine who had a refrigerator box that she made into a house. When the
box began to break down, she turned it into a spaceship. After the box got
soaked with rain and was flattened, the girl turned it into a ballroom.

Does this ring any bells for anyone? Thanks for any help you can give me!
