At the North Regional /BCC Library in Broward County FL, we provide a
resource center for Homeschoolers. We keep homeschooling catalogs on
file, as well as the Florida parent-organization pamphlets, a contact
list for people seeking assistance, subscriptions of several
Homeschooling magazines. We also provide tours and computer instruction
to groups upon request. We provide a meeting room for science fairs, art
shows, and other group special events (we do not provide regular meeting
space since so many local groups--not just homeschoolers-- would tie up
all our rooms, and we need the space for our own library programming)

Subject: Re: Software for children's area

We are a library serving a population of approximately 20K and are part of
a network using CARL software. In the children's room we have one KidsCat
terminal which is always in use. KidsCat is a customizable catalog which
allows you to search either by typing in author, title, subject or by
selecting buttons which have been created based upon the most commonly
searched for terms, in CARL's opinion. Kids like it and it is intuitive.
You may add buttons and search strings as you wish. That part of the
system is good. The part that is bad is that the catalog displays only one
record per title, even if the library owns multiple copies. Apparently,
CARL has not plans to fix this.

We also use Everybody's Menu, which allows a library to create a home
screen. On ours, we have the catalog, the WWW, magazine indices, etc. It
works well and is simple to use.

First I would like to thank everyone who sent me quick ideas for kites.
We ended up making the paper plate kites with the streamers attached
and the children loved them!! Thank you to everyone who sent ideas!

I am now looking for farm ideas-I have a few boys and girls that
love animals, playing with tractors .. I am thinking of a Farm Day
for 3 to 5 year olds. Any ideas?? (I know on this listserv
there are always lots of creative ideas.) I would be happy to
compile a list and post in a few weeks.
Thanks in advance.

Any of you story time providers who are feeling sorely in need of new
seasonal finger plays/songs might try inviting Old MacDonald off the
farm and sending him into dark streets and unsavory company - Use the
familiar tune but in minor, and then launch into (in your best
sepulchral tones) Old MacDonald went trick or treating, EIEIO, and when
he did he met a WEREWOLF etc. EIEIO, with a HOWWWWLLLLLLLL here and a
HHOOOWWWWWLLLLLLLLL there... So you go through as many nefarious
creatures as you have time/heart for, accompanied by their appropriate
vocalizations, and then wind up with "and when he did he ate too much
candy, EIEIO, with a GROAN here, and a GROAN there... " Most 5 and 6
year olds seem not to have been frequently encouraged to howl, cackle,
etc. in public before, and hearing them discover their previously
untapped talents in that arena is more fun than observing a host of
small simians at play.

We use Dynix and have one computer in the children's area with
Kidscat on it. It is the children's version of Dynix. Personnaly I find it harder to find things on then our regular version, but the kids love it. It is colorful and we have it on a very low desk, so even
the littliest ones like to use it & bang on the keys. This we try to
discourage, but kids just seem to have a natural attraction to all
computers!

Subject: Strollers in the Library

Strollers can certainly get in the way, but anyone who has been a parent
knows how helpful they are for moving your children and your "stuff" around
and I think it would be poor customer service to ban them from a place that
is supposed to be serving children and families. When we were planning a
new addition (that we never got...sigh) I asked the architect to plan for a
stroller parking area. Of course staff from other departments thought that
was an odd and amusing request, but if you had the space wouldn't it be
great to have an area that you could designate as a place the strollers.
You would still get the patrons with small children and sleeping children
pushing them around the room, but it might help with some of the congestion.

I wonder what other odd, anti customer service rules people have seen(at
other libraries and not our own I hope), it would be fun to hear about them.

I was at a library where there was a sign in the bathroom adjacent to the
children's department that said you could not put dirty diapers in the trash
can because the custodian only came at night and it would smell up the
bathroom (they worded it better than this but that was the message). Can
you imagine having to take a dirty, smelly diaper with you while you
finished browsing in the library, stopped in the lobby to check out your
materials and then put it in your car if there were no trash cans in the
parking lot! Yuck!

Hi everyone! Our library automated about one year ago - just got rid of the
card catalogs a few weeks ago. Anyway, our population is 65% senior
citizens and they are terrified of the OPACs. One of our wonderful
volunteers offered to be a docent several days a week and train any patron
who is interested. The City Librarian asked me if I could come up with a
catchy slogan to put on a bookmark and poster. I looked at her and my brain
went totally blank - thus, I am asking our wonderful pubyacers - HELP! They
want to make the bookmark as soon as possible as he started yesterday.

I really appreciate all of you for brainstorming with me. Thank you in
advance. Please reply directly to me and I will list the slogans.

Please would you tell me what the hot teenage series are in your library,

I'll compile and post the results to the list, of course.

Subject: Help with storytimes

Hi, I am planning my storytimes and am just a little stuck for
fingerplays, movement activities, flannelboards and the extras that go
into our storytimes. We are doing our S.T. on picture book authors and
the two I need help on are Margaret Wise Brown and Lois Ehlert.

We have plenty of stories for our Toddlers, 3&4's, and 4,5,&6's but not
too much in the "other" areas. Any ideas or suggestions would be most
helpful. Please post to my e-mail<dzierzbi@sls.lib.il.us> and if there
is any interest I'll post the replies to the list.

TIA. P.S. We are not big on doing craft type projects unless they
directly come from the books. Games, experiments, charting, music,
etc. based on the stories have been working very well for our groups.

Subject: services for homeschoolers

Dear Stephanie,
Currently, the only services we offer to homeschoolers is access to our
parent teacher collection, which has some great homeschooling resources
in it, and let families take more than 2 books on the same subject, when
appropriate. We also go out of our way to order requests for books for
members of families who we know homeschool. Often, the kids are asking
for fiction paperbacks, as opposed to parents wanted texts or expensive
nonfiction
I tried to get a list of homeschooling families from the city's dept of
ed, and the man in charge said it was a confidential list. We also
designed part of our children's room homepage with special links for
homeschoolers. Check it out at
http://www.Haverhill.com/Library/pt/ptindex.htm
We have talked about offering some sort of open house during the day to
meet homeschooling families, but it hasn't happened yet.
