CHILDREN'S LIBRARIAN--The Allen County Public Library
in Fort Wayne, IN, a 1998 All-America City and the best read city in

children's librarian for the main library's Children's Services
department. This position provides readers' advisory, reference
assistance, and collection development as well as program presenta-
tion both in the library and in schools and day care sites.
Required is an ALA/MLS and excellent communication skills. Also
required is knowledge of children's literature, computer fundamen-
tals, and CD-ROM products. Underlying all of these qualifications
is a deep respect and liking for children as well as the public and
a sense of humor. Range minimum with no experience is $28,121

TITLE: YOUTH SERVICES LIBRARIAN
CLASSIFICATION: PAY RANGE 21
DEPARTMENT: XENIA COMMUNITY LIBRARY
REPORTS TO: XENIA HEAD LIBRARIAN
HOURS: FULL TIME
STARTING SALARY IS $25,667

JOB OBJECTIVE: Serves in the Children's department of a large-sized
library in the system; evaluates materials collection, plans and
provides services and programming for children and young adults,
provides reference service at central reference desk.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:


· Evaluates and maintains the juvenile and young adult materials
collections to reflect the needs of the community. Identifies
weaknesses in the collection and selects replacements and/or additions
to collections.

· Provides reference service and reader's advisory service for those
using
the children's and young adults' collections.

· Instructs and aids adults, young adults, children and community groups
in
the use of the library and of reference tools; provides both one-to-one
assistance and group presentations.

· Plans, designs, promotes, presents and evaluates library programs for
children, young adults, parents and adults who work with children.

· Plans and/or prepares displays, bulletin boards, bibliographies,
pathfinders, and other informational materials.

· Participates in county-wide children's services, attends meetings of
the
Children's Council and Young Adult Council and participates in their
work; gathers statistics and prepares reports as needed.

· Consults with teachers and prepares collections for use with their
classes.

· Performs tasks of lower level classifications as necessary.

· Maintains good relations with the public and other staff, individually

and in general; shows tact and courtesy.

· Handles routine problems under the guidance of supervisor.

· Keeps supervisor informed of departmental needs and concerns.

· Keeps abreast of current developments in the field through attendance
and
participation in conferences and workshops and through programs of
continuing education, professional reading, and participation in
professional groups.

· Other related duties may be required by the supervisor. These duties
are
nonessential functions of this position.


SPECIFICATIONS:

· Master of Library Science degree from an ALA accredited school
required.

· Thorough knowledge of professional library science and administration
as evidenced in proven ability in children's/young adult service,
including extensive knowledge of children's/young adult literature and
proven ability to develop work programs.

· Ability to communicate clearly; listen, understand, speak, and write
effectively.

· Proven computer keyboard skills preferred.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

· Work is performed in an office like setting, but with need for
considerable mobility: light lifting, bending, stooping, stretching and
sitting at a variety of desks and service points.


· Must have keyboard skills, read print and on-screen information,
answer telephone, and assist patrons who may have any type of
disability.

· Employee may be scheduled to work evening and weekend hours, including
Sundays; schedules may be altered depending on the needs of the
library.

MACHINES, TOOLS, EQUIPMENT AND WORK AIDS:

· Variety of microcomputers, terminals, printers, typewriter,
photocopier, microfilm machines, telephone, fax machine.

· Television, videotape player, CD and cassette player.

· Program aids such as flannel boards, puppets, filmstrip and film
projectors, videotape player and monitor.

SUPERVISION AND EVALUATION:

· General direction for activities related to the Xenia Community
Library is received from the Head of the Xenia Community Library.

· General direction for youth services activities is received from the
Coordinator of Youth Services.
