Subject: stumper Appalachia!

Hi all,

Need some help with this one...entire K-3 school is looking for an easy reader picture Christmas time book that features some sort of Christmas train that goes through Appalachia distributing gifts to the children. Main character I believe is a doctor wh
o was a boy from that area who received a play doctor's kit from the train years ago and it changed his life. I think, at the end, he throws a play doctor's kit off the train to a little girl...we've got the storyline, just need the title and author!

The teachers are supporting a gift distributing program out of Delbarton School and the book would encourage kids to donate toys they themselves would like to less fortunate children.

Thanks for your help! I read the book to a class last year but can't find it again!

I have to say, that I agree with Andrew. After hearing Raschka read the
book (as well as _Yo! Yes!_), it did become easier and more successful
to use.

As for Arlene, older children (8-10 years old) "get" it, and my own have
talked about it since. They were talking about fishing, and different
kinds of fish we eat, and talked about the nets, smoking the fish, etc.
I do not think that they were disturbed by the "death" of Arlene.

Hi everyone
You have been very helpful to me in the past and I was wondering if I could
ask for some help in compiling a list of books and other multimedia
resources: CD Rom's, sound recordings, etc. for the second grade level about
neighborhoods and people in the neighborhood. I already have some ideas
like Gail Gibbons' non-fiction books. I haven't thought of many fiction
story books other than Town Mouse, Country Mouse. For other media, I thought
the CD Rom Busytown would work. If any of you have some other good ideas,
they would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Subject: BIB: Parent Teacher Collection So Far (long)

Folks,
after posting my request for more ideas for my parent teacher collection I
have received several emails requesting my list so far. This isn't a
complete list since I started in the middle of the process and
unfortunately the list is in the order in which I ordered items so it is
basically something to browse. Some of the titles on the list haven't even
arrived yet. The titles were culled from my brain, LJ, Booklist, PW,
Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books, VOYA, and SLJ. Someone asked
me for some of my favorites. Either my experience with or the reviews of
each of these obviously impressed me, otherwise I wouldn't have purchased
them. I have read the books by the Jeanne and Don Elium on parenting
(Raising a Daughter, Raising a Son, Raising a Family) and I've found them
to be very good. On the teacher resource side, if you haven't seen either
of the volumes of Children's Book Illustration and Design they are worth
finding. The artwork displayed is amazing. I've also ordered the latest
editions of old standbys of both types so I've got Dr. Spock and Penelope
Leach, A to Zoo, and Best Books for Children. Without further ado here is
my list:

Subject: Title for children's book

This is my first posting on the listserve and I hope you can help me.
I'm looking for a book I used about 5 or 6 years ago in storytime. It's
about an old man who has five or seven dogs and his friend, an old lady
who lives down the street. It is winter time and the old woman is
worried about her friend. She asked him if he was warm enough the night
before and he said yes, it was a one dog night and there is a picture of
a dog sleeping on top of him. Each night it gets colder and another dog
lays on his bed until it becomes a seven dog night.
I don't remember the author and I thought the title was "Seven Dog
Night", but I can't find the title listed on 1st search or in BIP.
Hope you can help. TIA.

Folks,
I am looking for the title of a book based on a Welsh tale. The Welsh
translates to something like Flower Face. The book involves one or more
kids who, I believe are on summer vacation. The central image belongs to
the decorations on a set of plates (or maybe just one plate). Sometimes it
looks like an owl (which is bad) or sometimes it looks like flowers (which
is good). Any ideas?
I am also putting together a book box and the teacher has asked for
science fiction stories with an element of suspense or mystery or with some
sort of twist but that aren't time travel stories? Any ideas along that
line? Thanks for any help you can provide.

Subject: New Mystery stories compilation

I asked for some recent mysteries and these are the replies I got:
Pat Vasilik recommends for fourth or fifth graders, Betsy Byars'
Herculeah Jones books. The newest (1998) is Disappearing Acts. But
there are at least 4 others, including Tarot Says Beware, Death's
Door, (Dark Stairs) and Dead Letter. Another "series" that I've been
able to book talk, although I don't think it's as good as Herculeah,
is by Linda Bailey. They are the Stevie Diamond mysteries. Titles
include "How can a Frozen Detective Stay Hot on the Trail?" and "How
can I be a Detective if I have to Baby-sit?"

One more just beginning series is by Wendelin Van Draanen. The
first one is called "Sammy Keyes and the Hotel Thief". The second one
is due out this fall and is called "Sammy Keyes and the Skeleton Man"

>From Torrie Hodgson came these titles:
New titles in the Hank the Cowdog series by John Erickson
Felicity Snell mysteries (2) by E.W. Hildick
Sammy Keyes and the Hotel Thief by VanDraanen
Secret of Platform 13 by Eva Ibbotson (may be sci-fi/mystery)
A to Z Mysteries by Ron Roy (transitional chapter book; alphabet
mysteries I think) (The titles are The Absent Author, The Bald
Bandit, The Canary Caper, Deadly Dungeon, Empty Envelope Falcon's
Feather and new The Goose's Gold. Published by Random House, The kids
like them BJ)

>From Nancee Dahms-Stinson came this recommendation : I was supposed
to make my 11-year old daughter read for 30 minutes each day, but when
she started reading Sammy Keyes and the Hotel Thief, she was reading
for 1-2 hour stretches. She finished it in a couple of days and then
read Sammy Keyes and the Skeleton. A new book is due, and she told me
it MUST be out in time for Christmas break!
