Subject: Re:YA Request/identity with humor
Dear Pubyacers,
One of my patrons, a teacher, has asked me to compile a list of YA fiction
that
combines an adolescent's search for identity with a sense of humor.
Two of the books already on my list are:
Rules of the Road by Joan Bauer
Rats Saw God by Rob Thomas
Any suggestions would be appreciated. I'll be glad to post a list of those I
receive.
Thank you,
Gail Fell

Subject: Tea parties
I have a patron working on a book ofr children about tea parties. She
plans to include recipes, crafts, etc., and would also like to include
a good bibliography of books for middle grade kids that have tea
parties in them. She's thought of Alice in Wonderland, and I
recommended she look at some of the older fiction by Boston, Estes,
Nesbitt, Blyton. I gave her Raggedy Ann, which has a doll tea party.
Can you think of any other titles for her? Please email me directly. thanks!

Subject: Re: STUMPER: Good girl wins out/Old Golden Book
We just recently received a wonderful book for our collections here at
MCL. In case some of you were not aware of its reissue, it might help in
answering those "Little Golden Book" stumpers.
A family treasury of Little golden books : 46 best-loved stories
/ selected and edited by Ellen Lewis Buell ; introduction by
Leonard S. Marcus ; the cover and endpaper designs are by Feodor
Rojankovsky.
New York, N.Y. : Golden Books, 1998.
1st published in 1960 as: A treasury of Little golden books.
46 is not all the golden books by any means, but it has helped to find the
favorites. It had mine which I've wanted so much to share at storytimes:
The Seven Sneezes.

Subject: STUMPER - medieval Lovell
Thanks to each of you (Kirsten, Jeri, Charlotte, Jen, Mary, Kayne, Carolyn
and Linda, so far!) who have replied.
You are unanimous in suggesting that the book with a medieval setting and
lame, orphan protagonist my friend read to/with her now 21 yr old son and
would like to identify and revisit is probably A Door In The Wall by
Marguerite De Angeli, and that the protaginist's name (the one part she
was "certain" about!) was probably not Lovell.
My friend is checking it with her son over Thanksgiving. Especially
appreciate those plot summaries; as I read them to her she said,
"Certainly sounds likely . . ."

Everyone was so kind to provide with the title of _Five Dog Night_, that
I thought I'd try two more books on you.
The book is about a teenager who's mother wins the election and becomes
the first women President of the US.
The second book is a sequel to the first book.
The girl is kidnapped by terrorists and chained to a cave and left alone
to die. She manages to free herself by smashing her hand with a rock and
slipping free of the chains. I believe her name is Meg.

The Research and Statistics Committee of the Management and Operation
of User Services Section of RUSA is sponsoring its Fifth Annual
Reference Research Forum at the 1999 American Library Association
Annual Meeting in New Orleans.
This is an opportunity to present and discuss your research project
covering the broad area of reference services such as user behavior,
electronic services, reference effectiveness and organization
structure and personnel. Both completed research and research in
progress will be considered. All researchers, including reference
practitioners from all types of libraries, library school faculty and
students, and other interested individuals are encouraged to submit a
proposal.
The Committee will utilize a "blind" review process to select a
maximum of
three (3) projects for 25-minute presentations, followed by open
discussion. The selected researchers must present their papers in
person at the forum. Criteria for selection are:
* Significance of the study for improving the quality of reference
service
* Quality and creativity of the methodology
* Potential for the research to fill a gap in reference knowledge or
to build on previous studies
* Previously published research or research accepted by December 1,
1998
for publication will not be acceptable.
Please submit a one-page proposal by DECEMBER 1, 1998. Notification
of
acceptance will be made by March 15, 1999. Submissions must consist
of no more than two pages. On the first page, please list your
name(s), title(s), institutional affiliation, and address (including
your mail address, fax number, and e-mail address).
The second page should NOT show your name or any personal information.
Instead it must include:
* The title of your project
* An explicit statement of the research problem
* A description of the research methodology used
* An explanation of the significance of the research to reference
services
Electronic submissions are acceptable and must also be delivered in
two
