I am just now pulling together our Holiday Storytimes. We do one week, each on Hanukkah, Christmas and Kwanzaa. We have a great time.

At the end of each storytime, the kids help us decorate. For Hanukkah, we put paper candles and flames on a paper menorrah on the back wall of the room. For Christmas, we all decorate a paper tree with paper ornaments (on the back wall). For Kwanzaa, we all put paper ears of corn on the mkeka (mat), also on the back wall of the room. EAch week we build on the last - the overriding theme is "this is how we all celebrate - we all use candles, we all sing songs, we all enjoy our families . . ." We loved it last year, and are repeating it!

Subject: UKOLN/EARL/LA publish filtering issue paper

PRESS RELEASE 1998/01
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

26th November 1998

Networked Services Policy Taskgroup produces filtering issue paper

Public libraries today face difficult policy decisions when thinking about
the provision of access to the Internet for their readers. Questions arise
on issues such as: do we provide Internet access for free; if we decide to
charge, how much; should we use filtering software; what is the length of
time people can use an Internet terminal for; what type of extra services
should be provided?

To help librarians answer these difficult issues, a series of papers will
be produced by UKOLN, EARL and the Library Association through the
Networked Services Policy Taskgroup. The first paper in the series has
just been published and looks at the use of filtering software in public
libraries. It explores exactly what filtering software is, how it works,
how effectively it works and some of the pros and cons for using it.

The paper does not argue for or against filtering, but does provide
impartial information on the topic so that library managers can become
familiar with all the issues involved and feel confident when they make a
decision about whether to implement it or not. All the papers will be
freely distributed to every public library authority in the UK and also to
other interested organisations. The papers will be written mainly by
members of the taskgroup.

Lorcan Dempsey, Director of UKOLN, says "These issue papers are a timely
and practical tool as libraries start developing networked information
services. They represent an important collaborative initiative in a time
of change".

Subject: BIB: - Graphic Novels Compilation

Hey All!
Here is the culimnation of my research in to the land o' graphic novels. This 6+ page listing notes any reviews I could find. Sorted by author, it is followed by a Source listing that you may find useful.

If you find anything that works for you, cross check it's author/title with www.amazon.com - this place is a GOLDMINE!! One page has complete ordering info as well as reviews, etc.

For those that requested a cc of this list, if there's anything I've forgotten (alzheimer's sets in early in this neck of the woods!) pls let me know.

Hmmm. Wonder if some of us got together and did group reviewing of GNs, would that make an SLJ article?

Bonne Chance!

A Brief Listing of Graphic Novels for Libraries

While researching graphic novels, I contacted the folks at Comics Journal via their online message board. Any title with a "Comics Journal Recommendation" is not necessarily recommended by that journal, per se, but was suggested as a good title for YAs by the participants of the journal’s message board. These participants were comprised of GN authors, illustraters, publishing house
employees, etc, since Comics Journal is that markets equivalent of School Library Journal. The same goes for any title with "PUBYAC Recommendation." That title was suggested by a participant of this mailing list for public children’s and YA librarians.

I searched Amazon.com, a wonderful online bookstore that posts reviews of books from Kirkus, Booklist, SLJ, Publisher’s Weekly and many other prominent reviewing agencies. If a title had an ‘authoritative’ review (as opposed to a review submitted by a customer of Amazon), it is mentioned with that title.

It is recommended that you ILL titles to review prior to purchase. At ACDL, we have weeded out several titles with promising reviews when we actually saw the material in question.

Because of our patron requests, this list is, admittedly, a bit heavy on the superheroes. I tried to
give a good blend of fantasy and sci-fi as well as historical, drama, and comedy. Don't forget the Manga (or Anime) if you kids like them!
