I have been job sharing in a Children's library for over 5 years
with the same partner. Overall, it has worked out well for us and the
library. We work in a totally bilingual community (English and French) and
have divided our duties by language. I handle the selection of English
materials, programming in English, readers' advisory in English and
outreach to local English schools. My partner handles the French side.
Obviously most communities won't be able to divide duties in such a manner.
However you set it up the job sharing, the specific and separate duties of
each librarian should be clearly drawn up before starting out or the two
partners will have to compete with each other to see whose "vision" of the
library wins out.

The greatest difficulty that we have had is in supervising the
staff, particularly when it comes to evaluation time. If both supervisors
are working with and evaluating the same staff, I think that each
supervisor should fill out separate evaluations, rather than averaging out
two views of the same employee into one evaluation. In general, I think the
more people the librarian supervises, the less likely that job sharing will
work.

Good luck in with your Job-sharing project.

Subject: Summer programs, esp. boys

HI EVERYONE, I AM CURRENTLY WORKING ON BOOKING PROGRAMS FOR THE SUMMER.
I AM THINKING OF A MAGIC SHOW, AND SOME CRAFT WORKSHOPS, BUT I AM FINDING
IT DIFFICULT TO FIND GOOD PROGRAMS THAT WOULD BE OF INTEREST TO THE TEEN
BOYS. I WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE IDEAS THAT WOULD HELP ATTRACT BOYS
(11 AND UP).

THANK YOU,

One comment that I remember from the last discussion of this topic was to put a table
in the men's room as well as the women's room (if you have separate bathrooms)
since fathers come to the library with children too.

This was a thought we entertained very briefly, but discarded because we thought
the children should be taught some responsibility in these matters. Possibly,
you could lower their fines, but that would be impossible on our current
hardware so I don't know if yours could be set up to do that.

My $.02!
