Subject: Stumper: Book from the '70's

I have a customer who read a book back in the '70's about a girl who would
not take a bath. Because she did not bathe, seeds began sprouting from her
arm. Several Children's Librarians here at SPL thought perhaps it was the
Silverstein poem. However, after checking with the customer, that is not
what she remembers. She remembers that it was a full-length picture book.
Please respond directly to me.
Thanks in advance,
Rebecca Connor

Subject: Books like Jean Auel

Hi all,
Has anyone heard of a series of books that are similar to the Clan of
the Cave Bear etc. books by a NH women author (?) who maybe has "Lynn"
as part of her name? I know it isn't much to go on...but I would
appreciate any help you might have. Even if the other details don't add
up, if you know of any series that is similar to the Auel books
(prehistory-fiction) I'd love to know about those too.
Please reply directly to me. Thanks!

Subject: books on self esteem

I have a patron who is in 4th grade and needs to read a book for a book
report on self esteem. He isn't sure whether it needs to be fiction or
non-fiction, so I'm trying to gather together both. I haven't had much
luck with what's included in Best Books for Children and A to Zoo. Any
ideas? Prompt responses are really appreciated. He would like
appropriate titles as soon as possible. Thanks.

Subject: unattended children policy

I need to remind everybody that although it is supposedly being revised,
ALA is still selling the monograph called LATCHKEY CHILDREN AND THE PUBLIC
LIBRARY jointly produced by ALSC and PLA over ten years ago, which
attempted to give both guidelines for writing policy in this area and
examples of various policies. I share this fact because I was the
principal author of the tome and get frustrated that nobody seems to know
about it--not that it has been promoted by ALA, of course. While the
bibliography is dated, the rest still sounds pretty relevant to the
contexts people describe here. If those of you needing the information find
it useless, please tell me and I will no longer remind anybody of its
existence.
