A patron is looking for a book he read in the early 1970's, when he was in
fourth grade. He believes the title is called _The Pit_ and it takes place
in Holland. He remembers a convent or monastery, dikes, wooden shoes, etc.
He couldn't say much about the plot. I know it's not much to go on. Any
ideas?

Subject: Stumper: Eating with Fingers

I have a patron looking for a book about a boy who eats with his fingers.
His parents try to get him to stop by telling him that something bad will
happen if he doesn't, but he continues. Finally, his fingers turn into
food or vines or something like that. No time period was given, he just
states that it was a book recently brought to school by another child.

Does this scenario strike a chord with anyone? Thanks.

I have been asked by the school librarian at one of the schools we serve
if we have videos on any author and if I will plan a program around that
author. Any suggestions
for videos on authors will be most appreciative, and if you can tell me
where you got
these videos, that also will help. Thank you very much.

Subject: Stumper Solved -- Fractured Fairy Tales

Stumper solved! Thank you, Torrie! This particular stumper made me aware
of a weakness in the subject headings at our library. Maybe others have
the same problem. Fractured fairy tales are treated very inconsistantly.
A useful heading does exist: "Fairy Tales -- Parodies, Imitations, etc."
In our library system, it was attached to exactly one title. The rest had
a variety of headings. "Fairy Tales -- Juvenile Fiction" was a big one,
but unfortunately that heading encompasses any literary tale; it doesn't
differentiate between straight and twisted ones. I'm getting Tech
Services to add the other heading for me. To that end, I made a list of
all of the fractured tales I could think of. It came to 20 odd titles.
I'll post it to this list if anyone's interested in seeing and/or adding to
it. The next time someone asks for fractured fairy tales, by golly,
I'll be ready.

>> A local family read this four or five years ago. They remember there
was a version of Cinderella, John Henry, Jack and the Beanstalk, and
perhaps one other tale.

Subject: Two stumpers

I'm looking for help with two stumpers. The first is a science fiction
book read about 40 years ago in which a man invented something lighter
than air and wanted to make it into a piece of luggage. The second
rings a bell, but we can't locate it: a picture book in which a shark
student eats his teacher. Any ideas?

Much thanks for everyone who responded to my stumper request for the
little boy who could travel many leagues in a day when he wore certain
boots. The story was (as you all suggested) Hop 'o My Thumb and the
Seven League Boots, which has many variations. I was able to locate this
in: The Cruikshank Fairy Book. The patron had read this as a boy in
Germany and was thrilled when we handed it to him! Thank you all for
your time and effort; it is greatly appreciated!

Subject: Stumper - alliterative poems

Hi,

A patron remembers that Saint Nicholas magazine used to run poems which were
full of alliteration. One he remembers began "With secreted circumspection and
a silver saxoiphone..."

Another poem began "With a crimson covered cookbook..."

He would like to know the name of the poet and if there is a volume of this
poet's poetry.

We've checked Granger's Index to Poetry and the Saint Nicholas Anthology.

If you know who it is, please email me oconnellr@clpgh.org

Thank you!

Subject: stumper: fat bird in space

Hi--

I have a patron who is looking for a picture book about a fat bird, a
mouse and either a dog or a rabbit who blast off in a rocket. At some
point they are riding around on a robot. She thinks she may have read
about it sometime in the last three months in either Ladybug or Click!
magazine. I couldn't find it in any of the issues of Ladybug that are
currently in, and we don't have a subscription to Click. I have tried
keyword searching our online catalog, and I have also searched A to Zoo
and Amazon.com. Does this ring any bells with anyone? Please respond
directly to me. Thanks a million!
