As a redheaded librarian I am trying to creat a personal collection of
books with redheaded characters. As a child, the only redhead I came
across in books was Pippi Longstocking! Please send me information on
titles that you can think of. Thanks for your help with this unique
project.

As a professional, I would have a hard time pulling "My Heart Is on
the Ground," despite its inaccuracies, simply because the demand for
all the books in the series is so high. We'd spend enough in ILLs to
buy 4 copies of the book--if, of course, we could find a library
that would lend it. But I did contact Oyate (the organization that
posted the review and that works to advance accurate portrayals of
Indian life and history) about alternatives to MHIOTG. Here they are
(sorry, don't have any authors):

Boarding School Seasons
Middle Five
Indian School Days
Daughter of Suqua
My Name is Seepeetza
"Mush-Hole": Memories of a Residential School

All are either available from Oyate or can be special-ordered from
them. Don't know about availability from standard library jobbers or
amazon. Oyate also publishes a resource book called "Through Native
Eyes: The Native Experience in Books for Children". It lists books
to avoid as well as alternatives. You can reach Oyate at their
website: http://www.oyate.org/index.html

Hope this can help.

Does anyone recognize this picture book? Child "swears" she got this book from our library, was even able to point out which shelf it was from, but doesn't know the title or author. This was a very articulate 6 year old who totally convinced me the book exists!

The cover has a fairy or other small person with wings, and the creature is playing some kind of instrument, which has hearts coming out of the end as music notes. The fairy is named "Tiffany" possibly. I have checked Ato Zoo, Children's Literature Database, Amazon.com, and the collective brains of out Youth Dept.

Those who have been following this discussion might be interested in a
book published by Groundwood Books in 1992 called _My name is Seepeetza_
by Shirley Sterling. This story takes place in the interior of British
Columbia in the 1960's, and deals with the issue of suppression of native
culture in residential schools. It is classified as fiction but is
definitely autobiographical.

Two questions for the collective brain:

Anyone have a great Revolutionary War series or encyclopedia they want to
recommend? Preferably biography-heavy.

Also, we are getting a new CD-ROM station and are faced with possibly
having to get Windows 98 rather than NT. Anyone use software to secure the
system without interfering with how the CDs run?
