Can't we use "police officer" and "fire fighter" instead of the old
"policeman" and "fireman" when we use these fingerplays with young children?

Hi! I'm a Youth Services Librarian in Colorado and we have had a rocking
chair for years in the children's space. It is the favorite place for
kids, parents and the storyteller (usually myself) to sit. I can't
imagine a children's room without one! Every once in a while an over
achiever manages to rock over, but no one has ever gotten hurt.

Folks - please, please, please, before you post things like this all
over the Internet, CHECK THEM for accuracy! It's yet another internet
hoax. If you'd like to read more about it (or any of the other internet
hoaxes flooding the net) please go to:

This "five-cent surcharge for e-mail" is one of their top stories this

Rocking chairs are wonderful! I had two when I was in Dunedin over 10
years ago and have not heard of any problems with them since I left. If
you are having any type of infant or preschool problems, I would
encourage you to get one so parents can feed the little ones. I consider
this as esential as changing tables in the restrooms.

No it's not real. It's from the May 26 issue of the parody newspaper The
Onion (which can be found at http://www.theonion.com
It's a very funny site. I also recomend thier new book "Our Dumb Century"

Greetings fellow pubyacers,
We have a beautiful new children's room due for completion in
January, 2000. There is a wall that I think would be perfect for a
mural. I would greatly appreciate feedback from people who have murals
in their libraries. What do you have, what would you do differently,
how did you manage selection of artist, etc.

Thanks in advance for sending your replys to me directly,
<storyweaver@newportnet.com>.

I had a rocking chair in my childrens room and for the most part there were
no problems but one day three boys (upper elementary) had turned it into a
ride while I was helping another patron and were launching each other out of
it. I was lucky to get out of that one with no major injuries. My feeling is
if you have any wild, unattended children you are right to be cautionary but
if the problems like that are few you should get it.
and since it is going to be donated I would suggest giving it a try.
And Thom Stuart, I agree with you about the Rinaldi book discussion. I asked
several people whose opinions I respect (not all librarians) and all of them
said they would buy the book. With the limited budget I have now, I would
have a hard time justifying something that I would never feel comfortable
recommending to anyone; regardless of my personal taste, but because it was
flat out lies. There is a big difference between books written in historical
times which may have viewpoints different from ours now but which reflect
the time period, and books written in present day that are historically
inaccurate.
Of course, all of these opinions are merely my own.
