Subject: Water Games

I would appreciate your collective help with a program I am working on.
I have very limited experience with children's programming and, although
we have brainstormed ad nauseam, nothing has really appealed to me yet.
We are doing a "Wet & Wild" water program and have booths on bubbles,
water balloons, and will start the program with sidewalk chalk art. We
will have all ages up to 12 years. Does anyone have previous experience
with a similar program and ideas that have worked well for you in the
past? You may respond either to the list or to me personally. Thank
You in advance for all of your help.

Subject: Federally mandated filtering for schools is back

Yesterday on CSPAN, a representative from New Jersey introduced an ammendment to this new Child Protection Act that would require schools who get ERate to install filtering software. The demagogue who introduced the ammendment talked about how school librarians already select books and said this is a natural extension of that service. He sounded completely magnanamous when he said that it would be up to each school system to decide what filtering software to use. He made no mention of the negative effect of filtering.

I think it needs to be mentioned that opposing this ammendment is going to be difficult for legislators, because it will seem like they are against the entire bill, and who doesn't want to protect children?

It also needs to be mentioned that this will be quite an economic boon for the filtering industry and their stockholders. And there will be lots of noise from the right.

Subject: FUN internet sites

To all,
We will be having an Internet Camp this summer and would like to promote
some fabulous web sites or games. We have a few scavanger hunts and
know the "popular" sites but wanted something a little different. We do
have a color laser printer so even cool things to print would be good
too. Thanks for your help. Please email me directly and I will compile
a list for all. THANKS.

Faith: I applaud you and Jeri for your comments. How many of the books
we are happy to suggest to readers are indeed accurate,
especially in an historical context? Your example of _True Confessions of
Charlotte Doyle_ was excellent! How about _Catherine Called Birdie_? How
many "Gothic" novels or romances accurately portray life in the period,
good or ill? Again, I thank you both for your comments.

Subject: RE: pet parade experiences

We've had pet shows and the biggest deal is keeping the dogs and cats
separated. Be sure you require leashes on every dog, and every other pet in
some kind of container as appropriate. Cats don't like leashes anyway (not
usually) and they're lots safer in a carrier. How tragic to have a pet run
away because it feared all the other critters and people.
