Subject: Stumper Solved-Little White Bed That Ran Away

I'd like to thank Karen Sutherland of the Bedford Park Public Library for
providing the title to this stumper. I would also like to thank Toni Grow
of the Baldwin Public Library in Birmingham, Michigan for providing the
author and title. The correct title is the Little White Bed That Ran Away
by Patten Beard. Toni generously provided a copy of the story, which can
be found in a collection titled Tucked-In Tales by Patten Beard, published
by Rand McNally & Company, Chicago. Our customer is delighted-thank you
again!!!

Subject: 2 stumpers: coastal area; yak

Hi,

We are looking for a chapter book that a customer read in the late 70s (when she was in 2nd grade). It is about two children who visit a coastal area or an island with highlands. They suspect that a witch lives nearby. There is a cove where the "witch" parks her boat. It turns out that she is not a witch after all.

We have looked in amazon.com and bookfinder to no avail.

Stumper #2
An old woman lives on a hill with a yak. There is a storm and water is rising. The pictures are dark. Perhaps the yak saves her. This is a picturebook that was read in the early to mid 70s. (It is not Hodges' The Wave ).

We have looked in A-Zoo, & Storytellers Sourcebook.

Any clues?

Thanks.

Subject: Personal Stumpers

I have a few stumpers of my own for you guys. These books were Juvenile =
Fiction back in the 60's. Here goes:
1. Some boys travel to the moon and discover the the "good guys" =
are actually the bad guys. They are trying to convince the adults of =
what they have discovered and eventually are on the run from the =
baddies. I remember the scene where they are hiding in a large supply =
room and one of the boys wants to hide in the way back and one says no, =
they should hide in the front and listen for the bad buys. They can =
move back once they hear anyone come in.
2. Some boys find themselves on an island. They discover some =
treasure and they are rescued just as the island begins to fall back =
into the water. It is not Treasure Island.
3. A young girl is so poor that she has to decide whether to put =
her one pat of butter on one piece of bread or spread it out over =
several pieces. For years I thought it was Half Magic or The Five =
Little Peppers, but it isn't.
4. A group of children have adventures. Some have ponies, others =
bicycles. There is a dog. "Vinnie" is rather poor. It seems like =
these books take place in the Appalachians.

As I said, all I have are little snippets, but they have been bugging me =
for years. You know the feeling I am sure.

Thanks,=20

Subject: New children's book review website

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg library system in North Carolina has a new
children's book review website. It is called "Bookhive" and is where
children and adults can read about good, interesting books. The books are
categorized into several genres such as Books and Babies, Adventure, Humor,
Mystery, etc. for ages birth to 12 years of age. Kids and adults can search
the database of reviews to find books by interest category, author, title,
and number of pages. We are asking librarians and children specialists to
review our site and give us feedback. Please visit the website and let us
know what you think about it. www.plcmc.lib.nc.us/bookhive

Yackers and Netters,
Hi! Please excuse the duplicate posting again. Here is the hit on
suggestions for the father of a woman with breast cancer who wants help
talking to her kids about the cancer and losing her hair. I had already
suggested Sammy's Mommy has Cancer. I want to thank those individuals who
took the time to send me their suggestions. If anyone has others please
let me know and I'll post a second hit if there's enough.
Thanks again,

Two books were mentioned: You hold me and I'll hold you by Carson and
Sophie by Fox

Here's the other suggestions I've received:

You might suggest he check with the local hospital or
cancer center. They often have programs for children
whose parents are undergoing treatment.

Help! A patron came in this morning looking for a book her
sister found @ a garage sale in the 60's...so it is safe to
say that is fairly old.

The short story was in an anthology. She thought the title of
the story was "Wendy and the Wonderful Washing Machine,"
although maybe no Wonderful. The plot: Wendy falls asleep on
her Washing Machine and dreams that said Washing Machine can
fly.

I tried the LOC catalog @ http://lcweb.loc.gov/catalog/ also
tried the Virtual Illinois Catalog @ http://vic.lib.il.us/
with no luck as this is a short story.

So now I'm trying PUBYAC. Any ideas?
