Dear collective knowledge,
Does anyone have an alternate source for the magazine "Parental
Discretion"? It is no longer being published. We, the youth department
are now out of a lovely source for movie reviews. "Preview : Family
Movie & TV Review" is okay for folks with a real moral content in mind.
However, a more secular approach to reviewing movies would be nice.

Doris,
We don't use filtering at our library, which is a medium-sized,
co-central library for the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Library System.
HOWEVER, we don't have Internet access in the children's area at this
time. In the adult area, people ages 13 and under, need to have a parent
or guardian with them while on-line. That's how we managed so far.
We'll be getting more terminals, soon. So things may change.
Good luck. Rosemarie

In the spring we have "pretend library cards"
that are our very old, paper cards. We write the
child's name on it, and each time they come to
the library we put a star on it. We only do it
for a few months, as part of festivities leading
up to National Library Week, but I suppose you
could do it year-round. We pretend to scan it,
and the littlest ones get quite a kick out of it.

Hope this helps.

Back in the mid-1970s, when I was a new children's librarian,I had a
character costume party. I can't remember it too clearly after all this
time, but, after having a character costume parade, I believe I had the
kids do some sort of match-the-character-to-the-book kind of paper and
pencil activity. I think I gave paper "blue ribbons" to everyone that
completed the exercise. Hope this helps.

We've been giving cards to newborns and up for many a long year. For the
past ten years, we have given out applications for library cards to
parents of newborns through our city and county health department. As we
say in our PR and when parents come in: A library card is the first and
best life-long card that a child can have!

Subject: Time Capsule Programs?

Greetings,

We're playing around with the idea of doing some sort of end of the
century event for children involving a time capsule. Something along
the lines of having a contest for kids, soliciting their ideas for the
best things to include in a capsule for children, to be opened in the
year 2025. Those with the best ideas will have the opportunity to
include their items in the capsule, which will be buried on library
property with suitable fanfare. (Each child will also be encouraged to
write a one page letter to future children to be included in the
capsule, so no one will feel as if he or she has missed a chance at
posterity...)

Has anyone out there tried anything of this sort, and if so, do you have
any tips or caveats for us? I tried to search the archives, but have
been unable to get a response from the server. I've tried both the
gopher and the webpage. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

Please respond off the list; if I get any useful information, I'll
summarize it and post to the list.

Please forgive the cross-posting...

I know this question has been asked in the last couple of years, but we
recently found out that a donor is giving us a substantial amount of money
to remodel/redecorate/redesign our story room. I would like to know what
has worked in this type of enclosed room in other libraries.

Our building is about 5 years old and the architects didn't think that the
kids needed much in the way of aesthetics....so the story room is a large
square (it has held up to 150 kids/adults) with a pillar in the middle of
the back side. There is a LARGE folding door that opens it to the rest of
the library. it is a VERY plain and VERRRRY boring room. we have plans for
display cases for all of our book characters and permanent frames that
would be used for rotating posters. Also, maybe eliminating the folding
door and have a large window with levelers to close it from view when in
use by staff.

If you have ideas, or have found something that really works in this type
of setting, please send them, we would like to start the project in about 2
months.

Kool Aid? Interesting. I've used the RIT dyes, which seem to work
fine, especially for a younger audience not overly ambitious about
the professional quality of the finished product. We used large
white handkerchiefs to make scarves, and they turned out great--and
were relatively quick to dry and take home, but we had clear plastic
bags ready for the dyers. Dharma Trading has some packaged dyes
that produce t shirts and such that are brighter and more long-lasting.
