Hi all,

This could be an impossible task. I just got home after eating dinner with my Dad. We talked about, what else, books. He said he remembered a book he read when he was about 10 about a goat. He turns 80 in two weeks, so this is a 70 year old book. He didn't remember any illustrations or even the story line, except it had a goat in it. He said he read it so much the pages were falling out. I would love to try to find this for him, if not for his birthday, then maybe Christmas. On my drive home I seem to remember him talking
years ago about "Billy Whiskers:" Could this have possilby been the character? He also said the print was large, he indicated almost an inch high, and he could read the book in an afternoon. Any leads?

Thanks much.

Yikes! It looks as though I never sent this! I *wondered* why I kept
getting responses! Thank you all so much...I received dozens of messages
suggesting the following books. I forwarded them to the colleague who
received the question. I'd love to tell you that the stumper was solved on
the patron's end, but I haven't been told. But I'm confident that you
nailed it for us. So thanks again!

Thank you to all who responded to my stumper about a series of books about
a white wolf adopted by a boy. This appears to be a Jack O'Brien set from
the 30's and 40's: Silver Chief: Dog of the North, Return of Silver
Chief, and Silver Chief to the Rescue. I received numerous responses with
this answer. Unfortunately, I cannot confirm that this was what the
patron was seeking, as he would not return my phone calls (I finally sent
it in a letter). [Don't you just hate it when that happens?!!] But thank
you for your help.

I have a patron who is looking for a non-fiction book she read when 25-30
years ago (1969 1974ish) which was a collection of stories (approximatley
25) about "outlandish" crimes the FBI had solved. It included some photos,
and was at a 4th - 5th grade reading level. Bonnie and Clyde were inculded
in the book.

I have checked in Books in Print (CD Rom version) and our card catalog (DRA
- - statewide for Wyoming).

As usual, your collective wisdom is much appreciated!

A patron is trying to locate a book she had as a child. She thinks the
title is either 100 Favorite Children's Poems or just Favorite Children's
Poems. It is probably from the early part of the century. Some of the poems
she remembers are "The Cowardly Dragon", "The General Store", and "Stephen
Wants a Mouse". Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Subject: STUMPER: Fanny Blowhard

Please excuse any cross-posting. I'm desperate.

This stumper is a story that was probably published between
1936 and 1944.
The requestor remembers reading it in a collection of similar
stories, with a full-page illustration on the left and the text of the
story on the right. She believes the name of the character and
story are
"Fanny Blowhard." Fanny is an electric fan in an office building.
Fanny
goes berserk and blows papers everywhere. Other stories in the
collection
include one about a steam shovel, a tugboat, and possibly a
bulldozer.
(Makes me think of Mike Mulligan). She hopes to locate a copy of
this book
for purchase, if possible, so any leads as to the anthology's
name/author/editor/etc. will be most appreciated.

It is apparently not a Virginia Lee Burton story, nor is it _The brave
little toaster_.

I have found one reference to the character at:
http://www2uchicago.edu/alumni/alumni.mag/9506/June95Planestra
inscontin.html

The quoted passage is:

" 'As early as 1932,' [Neill] Harris writes, 'electric fans named
Fanny Blowhard, file cabinets, desks, and elevators were chatting
easily with one another.' "

Please help. It's making me crazy that I'm so close to finding it!

Thanks in advance! I hope you can help.

Subject: States and Picture Books

Hello collective brain:

I am working on a list of picture books that take
place in specific U.S. states or cities. I have
had a few requests from parents here, and I think
it fits in nicely with one of the activities on
the back of the America Reads Challenge
Read*Write*Now poster from the Department of
Education.

The idea is that each book has to mention the
state (or city) specifically, i.e. _One Morning
in Maine_ or _Make Way For Ducklings_ would be
fine, but ones that just mention "the West" or
"the East Coast" wouldn't fit.

Any ideas out there? I'll post to the list when
I'm finished and share it with all of you.

Thank you.
