Subject: Stumper: Oregon survival

I'm hoping someone has the answer to this. A woman came in who had read
part of this book 5 or so years ago and wanted to finish it. (She knew
exactly what drawer of the card catalog the author card was in, but we have
since gotten rid of the old card catalog!)

In pioneer Oregon (not Oregon Trail), a boy and his dog get lost in the
mountains. His family think he is somewhere else and won't look for him.
His dog is trapped in a canyon and the boy is trying to get him out. The
author's last name may start with an L, and the book is upper elementay or
young adult level, not new when she read it 5 years ago. It didn't happen
in the winter, if that helps eliminate any titles.

She has been looking for this for years, very patiently searching the
shelves for where it "should" be. (I didn't have the heart to tell her that
we had weeded and rearranged that section as well as getting rid of the
card catalog!)

I've tried every conceivable keyword that I can in our OPAC but still am
not coming up with it. I also checked "What do young adults read next?" and
nothing rang a bell.

She has been so patient, but obviously if she has been pursuing this for
years, it's important to her. So any help will be greatly appreciated!

TIA -

Subject: Stumper: aztec video

Our patron is looking for a video of a show he saw on tv (on Nickelodeon he
thinks) about 12 years ago. The title he remembers is "Mysterious Cities of
Gold." It was an animated show about the Aztecs (or maybe Incas?) and
Spanish conquistadors. He's pretty sure it was part of a series. Could
have been made in France (or maybe Japan?). We've checked in WorldCat and
Bowker's 1999 Directory of Videos for Children. It may not even exist on
video, but we'd like to find it to buy or borrow if it does. Any ideas?

editorial--Dr. Laura: Wronging rights in the library--found on the

The editorial praises librarians, as the following paragraph
evidences:

"What's puzzling is that so few people have come to the ALA's defense
for what amounts to a bizarre attack on the integrity and motives of
some of the nicest people in the whole world, the folks who work in
our libraries."
