We have a customer who remembers a novel about "Jimena" kidnapped from

Subject: Sandman stumper
Dear Yakkers,
We have a patron who wants a book about a child who doesn't
believe in the Sandman--you know, the one who helps children go to sleep.
She's not thinking of a book in particular; she just wants to know if
there is a book like that. I found one called THE SANDMAN by Rien
Poortvliet, but it's about the travels of the Sandman, not about someone
who doesn't believe in him. The subject heading on this one is
Sandman--juvenile fiction. There's another book called THE SANDMAN by
Rob Shepperson, but there are no subject headings, and my library doesn't
have the book. Does anyone have it who can tell me about it? I doubt
that many children have even heard of the Sandman these days. Let me know
at williael@oplin.lib.oh.us if you have any leads on this. Thanks!

Thanks for the MANY responses to this question. I've included your =
specific suggestions, along with a reference book or two and a website!=20

In no particular order:

Pollcco, Patricia Pink and Say Philomel, c1994
VanAllsburg, Chris (Anything by Chris is wonderful!)
Yolen, Jane The Ballad of the pirate queens Harcourt, c1995
How about I Never Knew Your Name by Sherry Garland and Rose Blanche by
Roberto Innocenti and Black and White by David Macaulay?=20
Two titles that immediately spring to mind for me are David=20
Macaulay's "Black and White", and "Faithful Elephants" by
Yukio=20
Tsuchiya.
The first one that comes to mind is one of last years' Caldecott Honor =
books, "Tibet: Through the Red Box" by Peter Sis. Because of the
highly =
detailed nature of Peter Sis' artwork , some of his others might also =
qualify, depending on how old your "older readers are. For example, "A
=
Small Tall Tale from the Far, Far North" and "Starry Messenger"
would =
both be way over the heads of preschoolers.
David Macaulay's "Black and White"
"An Angel for Solomon Singer" by Cynthia Rylant & Peter
Catalanotto
Birchman, DavidL A Tale ofTulips, A Tale of Onions
Bodkin, Odds: The Banshee Train
Breathed, Berkeley: Red Ranger Came Calling
Brown, Judith: The Mask of the Dancing Princess
Coleman, Evelyn: The Foot Warmer and the Crow
Conrad, Pam: Call Me Ahnighito
Garland, Sherry: I Never Knew Your Name
Gogol, Nikolai: The Nose
Melville, Herman: The Catskill Eagle (beautiful landscape work by =
Thomas
Locker)
Murphy, Jim: The Last dinosaur
Place, Francois: The Last Giants
Stanley, Diane: The Gentleman and the Kitchen Maid
Yolen, Jane: The Ballad of the Pirate Queens
The Eleventh Hour by Graeme Base. =20
There is at least one resource you may find helpful: Picture Books for
Older Readers. It's an oversized paperback which we shelve in our
Parent-Teacher Collection.=20
You might find a book I co-authored helpful -
Worth a Thousand Words: An annotated guide to picture books for=20
older readers by Bette Ammon and Gale Sherman (Libraries=20
Unlimited, 1998).

Subject: Stumper: Lucky the cat?
I had a patron request a picture book she had read, but we unfortunately
were not able to think of what it might be. Hopefully, someone on the
listserve may be able to help our staff and patron. She remembers that the
plot involved a cat who had befriended a mouse. One of the characters'
name was Lucky. The owner of the cat was not happy that the cat had done
this act, so the animals left that person's home and were later "taken
in"
by an older woman.
Any ideas? You may e-mail directly if you can give me some input.
Thanks in advance!
