Re that Harry Potter---I can forsee a problem because of a difference in
editions. If you add that British edition to your holdings it will
immediately start collecting multiple reserves. Then when you add the
American edition it will have its own record and people will start
reserving that one, but if it appears below the British edition on the
screen for people, most people go for the first entry they see and you
will have lots of reserves for the one copy of the British edition, and
perhaps not so many on the American, the two queues will cause confusion
and if patrons figure it out, bad feelings as some people who reserved
later than others will get a copy before earlier reservers, blah blah
blah.
How do I know this? Because it happened in my system with HP#2!
It took lots of confabbing and conferring between Juv Services and the
Catalog dept to combine the two records into on (with catalog dept
resistance). I would recommend doing what I do in my branch with the
surprising number of gift copies we get of the British edition. Put
a plastic jacket on it, slap on a typed label that says "Check out in
pamphlet envelope" /"give to children's librarian when returned".
Each time I stick the book on my "Like Harry Potter" shelf and some
wildly thrilled patron discovers it on a "it's your lucky day" basis.

Hi
I posted this to YALSA last week and got only two responses. I was hoping
for more. Last week a patron donated the third Harry Potter book. Since
it's not due for release here in the states until September I was wondering
if there was any reason legal or otherwise why I can't add the book to my
collection now? Thank you in advance.

Subject: stumper-turtles

We have a patron-thirtyish-who remembers a book from her childhood about a
boy who finds a turtle on the beach and takes care of it. It produces eggs
which hatch and the boy makes a fence for the babies. When they are big
enough he lets them go into the ocean. She thinks it is a picture book or
certainly one for young readers. We have tried keyword searching and A to
Zoo, but nothing was immediately recognizable. She also worked as a page in
the early 90's and remembers shelving it-but not where...
All suggestions appreciated.
Thanks-
Susan

Subject: saying goodbye

Hello all,

Am hoping for some help from creative souls: I'm leaving my current job in
about a week and moving to another state and a new library. During my time
here I've become very close to several children and families in particular.
I would like to do something special for them to say goodbye before I go,
but I'm not sure what. I am going to bring my camera to work and plan to
try and get photos, but I'm wondering if any of you have been in a similar
situation and what you did?

Please respond to me directly. TIA!
