Teen volunteers could also be used to write "reviews" - either for
your newsletter (or one that you may contribute to), or post on a
special bulletin board display.
Or, create a physical display of "favorite" books chosen by your teen
volunteers. (Mary's pick of the week, John's pick of the week).
This would create an opportunity for more teens to volunteer, and use
teens with different talents! Any more ideas?

Dear Pubyacers,
Thanks for your patience. I've finally gotten around to passing along your suggestions for a Halloween puppet show. Thanks to:

Heather Robinson for _Piggie Pie_ by Margie Palatini
Rebecca Cohen for "The Fifth Witch" from _Puppet plays for special days_ by Eleanor Boylan
CW2190 for _Humbug Witch_ by Lorna Balian
Anne Lemay for suggesting some of Alvin Schwartz's scary stories
Anne & Roger Hall for suggesting rewriting either "The Coffin Story" or "Wrapping Paper"

We've decided to do an adaptation of _Piggie Pie_ and are calling the show,
"Which meal is witch or don't wolf down your food." Thanks for the script, Heather.

Any age can pull up nude pictures from movies, web sites or any number of seemingly harmless links.
We have even had an absolutely embarrassing situation
here where a child typed in whitehouse.com instead of
whitehouse.gov. Though I am no prude, these are things
I, myself, was able to avoid all my 48yrs. but now
have flashed in my face whether I want to see them or
not. I am still adamant about NO censorship except
by the parents and guardians of the children using
computers. I do have another question....Is it
censorship if I ask the kids who are looking up
wrestling to turn down the sound because the language
is offensive to anyone in the library?

Seems to me the same as we do with other demonstrably harmful products like cars,
guns, alcohol, cigarettes etc. - make their use an adult prerogative. We
already make some attempt to do this by having a rating scale for movies (which
should be a lot stricter for violence IMHO) , limiting the sale of pornography to
adults etc.. I'm not wild about the prospect, but I think it would probably make
more sense than blilthly ignoring the evidence and allowing the harm to continue.

Subject: RE: mother daughter book group challenge

Coming from a single parent home I always felt left out when they would hold
father/daughter programs. Or mother/daughter programs when I was at my
fathers house. (They lived 1500 miles apart) It is the child who is hurt
by the group specifying the gender of the parent. Why not just make it a
parent/daughter program and a parent/son program. This way the girls and
the boys do get to have their seperate programs but are not left out if
their parent happens to be of the opposite sex.

Subject: Re: Free Expression Network: An Appeal to Reason

I've tried to stay out of this discussion, because I'm not sure
*what* I think -- on the one hand I think that filters are a lousy idea
until we can trust them to read minds and make value judgments, i.e.,
never; on the other hand, I myself have run across a lot of sites that
shocked and offended *me* (and that's not easy!), not by accident but
because I have been deliberately tricked into it by hidden HTML codes and
deceptive site names, and sometimes these sites just don't "go away with a
click on the X". What really bothers me is that this is not a case of
denying me information that I wanted; it's a case of tricking me into
viewing information that I definitely *didn't* want. I don't think that
preventing the latter comes under the headings of censorship.
I think Chuck has a valid point with his distinction between
words, ideas, and information on the one hand, and images on the other.
Let's put it this way: if a man in the children's room was deliberately
unzipping and showing his penis to children, I think we all pretty much
agree on how we would react. How should we react to pushers of web
pornography who trick children into viewing something much more graphic
when they do a search on (for example) "pokemon"?
As a parent, personally, my philosophy has always been that
if children are old enough to ask a question (or seek out the
information), they're probably old enough to deserve an answer. So let's
talk about the technological issue, as opposed to the moral; how can I
prevent access to *unwanted* information *by accident or deception*, while
still allowing access to the same item to the patron who, for whatever
reason, deliberately seeks it out?
