Collective Brain,

I am posting this from a stumpers list that I belong to. Person is seeking
a book, possibly written about 20 years ago by a Daniel Conway about a
"Super Dan" kid who solves robberies in a bumbling Clark Kent-sort of way.
The entire book is written in poems.

Author (if not Daniel Conway)? Title?

I have just purchased several copies of a new, sturdy set from Child's
World. It is called the Wonder Books series, or the Wonder Books phonics
series. The set of 35 library bound books is $449, and each book
highlights a different sound. The books are the most attractive phonics
set I have ever seen--by far.
Child's World's tollfree number is 800-599-READ.
Everyone who has seen the set on our staff is much taken with it.

Thanks to Mary D'Eliso and Susan Gottesman for the information.

Roxy Ekstrom also suggested the Sesyle Joslin books "What Do You Do Dear"
and "What Do You Say Dear" as something similar. Thanks Roxy.

Subject: Position posting

The Dayton and Montgomery County Public Library is seeking two
Children’s Librarians for two distinctly different branch locations
within our county-wide system.

Dayton View Branch Children’s Librarian: This medium sized branch
library is located close to downtown, in an urban historic
neighborhood. Both patrons and staff enjoy the beauty of the branch’s
original architectural design. The Dayton View Branch offers a diverse
collection of adult and children’s materials and participates in
community outreach programs with the local Priority Board, professional
associations, and schools within the service district. This position
offers both current challenges and future growth opportunities.

Miami Township Branch Library: This large suburban branch library is
still under construction and is scheduled to open in the summer of
2000. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to be involved with the
excitement and anticipation of opening a new branch library. This
position will be filled immediately with the understanding that the
individual hired will play a vital role in the planning and design of
the children’s area, selection of children’s material and initiation of
children’s activities. Help us build a strong children’s component
while we build the new branch library.

Job Responsibilities: Children’s Librarian’s are under the direction of
the Branch Manager. Responsibilities include providing reference
assistance to children through print and electronic resources; providing
readers advisory for children, parents and teachers; developing and
coordinating children’s activities; presenting programs to promote
library use; evaluating, selecting and ordering books and other
materials appropriate for children’s needs.

Job Qualifications: ALA accredited MLS, ability to use Internet and
other new information technologies and excellent community relation
skills required. Prior children’s service in a public library
preferred.

Fringe Benefits: Starting salary $33,176.00 with exceptional fringe
benefits including health, vision, dental and life insurance, 22 days
vacation, 15 days sick leave and 12 paid holidays annually.

Location: Dayton is an attractive city with a low cost of living. The
city offers a surprising variety of cultural and educational
institutions within a twenty mile radius. Ohio’s libraries are among
the best funded in the country, and the Dayton and Montgomery County
Library enjoys strong local support.

Application Process: Send letter of application and resume to Cindi
Chibis-Fladen, Personnel Manager, Dayton and Montgomery County Public
Library, 215 East Third Street, Dayton, Ohio 45402.

Subject: 3 stumpers

I post this for a patron who asked, "How to I get to an internet list
where people know about old books?" She is 34 & looking for 3 books she
remembers from her childhood.

1 -- A whale with a Band-Aid on it's tale. Remembers the Band-Aid being
pink. Was put there by a sailor or a pirate because the whale was
injured.

2 -- A doll is left in the grocery store. She remains tiny but comes
alive & runs about in frozen foods. Remembers the doll eating frozen
peas before the child comes back for her.

3 -- An "oriental" girl kicks off her wooden sandals and the direction
in which they land predicts the weather.

Any clues?
Thanks --

Subject: Books about poverty

Hello to all -

A patron just asked for books dealing with poverty, to be read aloud at the
Unitarian Church just before Thanksgiving. The target age group is 4
through grade school. (Raising the social consciousness of the audience.)

Here's what I came up with off the top of my head:

Erandi's Braids
Gift of the Magi
December
Silver Packages
Coat of Many Colors

The books could also deal with how people cope with being poor or not able
to afford things.

Any ideas of picture books along this topic?

TIA!

Subject: Stumper: Slowly He Turns

We are trying to help a gentleman who appears to be in his 40s who wants
to find a scary poem he remembers from his childhood. It has a refrain,
"slowly he turns" but we aren't sure of a first line. We've tried all
the volumes of the Index to Children's Poetry and a couple volumes of
Grangers. The only poem he thought could possibly be in from Grangers
was Panic by Archibald MacLeish, but our volumes of his poetry don't
include that particular poem. We think the poem was rather Halloween
oriented. The narrator would see what he thought was a ghost, but it
would be something harmless instead. If anyone recognizes this, contact
me directly.
