Subject: Stumper: Janet from another planet
Hello to all - another stumper!
A patron remembers a poem from 25-30 years ago with either the title or the
first line "Janet from another planet." She thinks it might be Ogden
Nash.
(We looked at an Ogden Nash book and it wasn't in there.) It could possibly
be from a children's magazine.
Any ideas? (We looked in Granger's, and on the internet.)
Thanks!

Subject: old songs
Hi!
A patron is asking for the words to two old songs (40s-50s). One is a
song she thinks
by Bing Crosby called "A You're Adorable, B You're So Beautiful," and
the other is a
song with all the states in "What Did Delaware boys?" I can find
little
snatches or pieces
of the song, but not the complete song with all the states. Can anybody
help me on this
puzzler? Thank you!

Subject: Resource for Preschool Programming
Hello Everyone,
In a recent posting to PUBYAC, Kathy Reid-Naiman mentioned her three
recordings for preschoolers & their families: Tickles & Tunes, More
Tickles & Tunes, and Say Hello to Morning.
These recordings have been very useful to me in planning infant, toddler &
preschool programs. Kathy Reid-Naiman is an excellent researcher as well as
a talented musician. On her recordings, you'll discover many new songs &
rhymes in addition to the more familiar ones. Her music fits in well with
other preschool stories, materials & themes. That's how I found them most
useful in programming. But, what I love the most about Kathy's recordings
is they're easy to listen to and they invite you to sing along.
For more information on Kathy Reid-Naiman & her music, visit her website at:

Sincerely,
Jackie Howard

* ALA Removes Farrakhan Website After FF Notifies ADL
Last month in the FF newsletter (see:
<http://www.filteringfacts.org/fl090399.htm> ) I
mentioned that I had sent a letter to the Anti-Defamation League pointing
out the inappropriateness of the ALA recommending Louis Farrakhan's Nation
of Islam site for young children. Among the sites featured at "700+
Amazing, Spectacular, Mysterious,
Wonderful Web Sites for Kids and the Adults Who Care About Them" at
http://www.ala.org/parentspage/greatsites/ is a "Religions of the
World"
page at http://www.ala.org/parentspage/greatsites/people2.html WAS

ALA Executive Director William Gordon removed the NOI link after receiving
this letter from ADL National Director Abraham Foxman:
September 8, 1999
Mr. William Gordon
Executive Director
American Library Association
50 E. Huron
Chicago, IL 60611
Dear Mr. Gordon,
It has been brought to our attention that Louis Farrakhan's Nation of
Islam is included in your "700+ Amazing, Spectacular, Mysterious, Wonderful
Web Sites for Kids and the Adults Who Care About Them" web site. We are
writing to express our concern about this matter and to inform you of the
racist and anti-Semitic nature of the Louis Farrakhan's organization and
rhetoric.
For years Louis Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam have spread the message
of Black separatism and anti-Semitic bigotry throughout the United States
and the World. In the process, Farrakhan and his lieutenants have
relentlessly attacked Jews and denigrated the Holocaust. Echoing
centuries-old anti-Semitic imagery, they have repeatedly referred to Jews
as "bloodsuckers", and have frequently promoted the conspiratorial
view of
a world run by powerful Jewish bankers and other secret interests.
Farrakhan's invective goes well beyond mere name-calling. He has sought
to propagate the myth that Jews controlled the American slave trade and has
even gone so far as to blame Jews for the Holocaust itself.
According to your selection criteria developed by the site review
committee, "Sites promoting social biases (gender, racial, religious, or
other types) rather than enlarging the views of the child should not be
considered worthwhile sites." It seems clear that the Nation of Islam
Online does not meet your review committee's criteria.
We would be happy to send you further information citing the bigotry of
Louis Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam.
May we hear from you regarding this matter.
Sincerely,
Abraham H. Foxman
National Director
David Burt, President

Subject: stumper-penguin family
I have a patron who is looking for a book she read as a child in the 1950s.
She says it is a small picture book, like a Little Golden Book. It is about
a penguin family whose wood stove melts their igloo at the north pole. She
remembers a little penguin alone on an iceburg looking forlorn and wearing a
stocking cap. Does this ring any bells? Thanks for your help!

Subject: Boys on holiday stumper
Hello there everyone,
I had a question from a patron yesterday who was after the title of a
children's book written some time ago about several boys who were friends
away on a holiday of some sort together. On their way home the plane they
were travelling in crashed onto an island. Things started out ok on this
island but relationships between them soon deteriorated and the patron seems
to recall that cannibalism (!) was quickly becoming an issue on this island.
The patron can't recall that much more detail and since I have no idea of
the title in question I was hoping some collective thinking could help out.
Thanks all.
