Subject: Trashy Storytime
There's a great new picture book - Trashy Town by Andrea Zimmerman - that has
proved to be a great preschool read-aloud at our library. I'd like to
incorporate this book into a 2-year-old storytime - all about garbage and
garbage trucks. My problem: I having difficulty digging up any other TRASHY
songs/rhymes/fingerplays/activities. I'd really appreciate any suggestions.
Also, let me know if you're interested in my results, and I'll e-mail a
compiled list of suggestions.
Thanks very much!

And thanks to the two people who have likely identified the other books

The book where a doll is abandoned in the frozen food section of the

I submitted this stumper a while back - just as the list was having
techical problems. As I got no responses, I thought I'd try again.
My patron remembers a series from the early sixties, late fifties about
a black girl who wanted to be a doctor. All the titles had the word
star in the title, like "Star Light " or "Star Bright" . Any
ideas?

Subject: Re: Dinosaur Songs, Fingerplays (very long)
Hi all!
I'm finally getting this list posted to you. Thanks again for all your
help. Here goes:
Fingerplays and Action Rhymes
:
One baby dino began to roar
"I want to eat, s'more, s'more"
Two baby dinos began to roar
"We want to eat, s'more, s'more"
(Etc. to as as many as you want to do & then)
5 baby dinos ate so much more
That they all fell asleep & began to snore.
Right in the midst of a steamy fog
A dinosaur fell into a muddy bog.
He rolled around like a huge wooden log,
And then leaped out like a giant frog.
Fog, Bog, Log, Frog!
(Do appropriate motions as you say each line, then repeat motions with
last line.)
"Dinosaur, Dinosaur"
Dinosaur, Dinosaur, turn around (turn around twice)
Dinosaur, Dinosaur, touch the ground (bend knees & touch ground)
Dinosaur, Dinosaur, Roar! Roar! Roar! (loudly roar 3x)
Dinosaur, Dinosaur! (put hands on cheeks, look scared, shriek words)
Shut the door! (loudly recite words, turn around, run in place, turn
back, and pretend to slam the door shut!)
or
Hit the floor (sit back down)
"Earthquake"
An Apatosaurus was walking down the street,
And a Diplodocus he did meet. (slowly stamp feet)
Giant feet and all that weight,
Made the street quiver and quake. (stamp feet while legs shake)
Quiver, quiver, shake, shake, shake (shake entire body)
Quiver, quiver, shake, shake, shake (repeat above action)
(Loudly) It's a dinosaur earthquake!!!
Let's look for bones. Dig, dig, dig.
Dinosaur bones. Big, big, big.
Back to the lab. Zip, zip, zip.
Clean the bones. Chip, chip, chip.
Put them together. So, so, so.
We've built a dinosaur. Oh, oh, OH!
Spread your arms, way out wide,
Fly like Pteranodon, soar and glide.
Bend to the floor, head down low,
Move like Stegoasaurus, long ago.
Reach up tall, try to be
As tall as Apatosaurus eating on a tree.
Use your claws, grumble and growl
Just like Tyrannosaurus on the prowl.
What were the dinosaur sounds? Who knows?
(repeat)
What were the dinosaur sounds so long ago?
What were the dinosaur sounds? Who knows?
2nd verse---Tyrannosaurus might have roared. ROAAR
(repeat)
Tyrannosuarus might have roared so long ago,
Tyrannosaurus might have roared. ROAAR
(repeat)
3rd verse---Mussaurus might have squeaked
4th verse---Hadrosaurus might have honked
5th verse---Diplodocus might have growled
6th verse---Compsognathus might have squawked
Dinosaurs used to stomp,
They used to roar and moan.
But now they are quiet (fingers to lips)
And quite still (sit down)
Because they've turned to stone.
Apatosaurus, stegosaurus, tyrannosaurus, too.
Three big dinosaurs with nothing to do.
They went to the river to get a drink and
Before they got back, they became extinct.
"Dinosaur Moves" (chant it)
Spread your arms, way out wide
Fly like pteranodon, soar and glide
Bend down to the floor, heads down low
Move like stegosaurus long ago.
Now reach up high, try to be
As tall as apatosaurus eating from a tree,
Use your claws, grumble and growl
Just like tyrannosaurus on the prowl.
"Dinosaurs" (from Finger Frolics)
Five dinosaurs letting out a roar --
One went away , and then there were four.
Four dinosaurs, crashing down a tree --
One went away, and then there were three.
Three dinosaurs eating tiger stew --
One went away and then there were two.
Two dinosaurs racing in the sun --
One went away, and then there was one.
One dinosaur afraid to be a hero --
He went away and then there were zero.
The dinosaurs lived long ago
When life on earth began.
Some were tall (stretch hands upward to show height)
Some were small (crouch low)
Some liked water (make swimming motions)
Some liked land (stomp feet)
Pteranodons (tuh-ran-us-dons)
Had leathery wings (flying motions)
Apatosaurus had long necks (hands on jaw, palms upward)
And the meanest dinosaur of all
Was the Tyrannosaursus Rex! (feet apart, hands clawlike, growl)
"No More Room" (Kidstuff issue on dinosaurs, volume 6, numbers 5 &
6)
Place cave shape on a flannel board or create a box or brown paper sack
cave. Place 10 dinosaurs (toys or laminated paper cut outs) close
together, with some overlapping each other within the cave. Children can
recite in unison the refrain in quotations, printed up on an overhead,
posterboard, or flipchart. When indicated, remove each dinosaur from the
cave, rolling the dinosaur, head over heels, right off the board or out
of the box or sack. Continue counting backwards, until only one dinosaur
is left in the cave. End by reciting the last verse, and returning all
the dinosaurs to the cave as directed.
Two huge dinosaurs sleeping on a cave floor,
Woke up and started to roar,
"There's no more room, no more room,
There's no more room on this cave floor!"
They tossed and turned and pushed some more
Till one poor dinosaur rolled out the door."
Nine huge dinosaurs. . .
Eight. . . (continue)
Two . . .
One huge dinosaur sleeping on a cave floor,
Woke up and started to roar,
"There's too much room, too much room,
There's too much room on this cave floor.
"I'm lonely, I'm sad, it was better before.
It's much more fun crowded on the floor."
So, they tossed and turned and pushed through the door,
Till ten happy dinosaurs were snoring on the floor.
THE END
The following are from KIDSTUFF "Dinosaur Daze"
"Dinosaurs"
The Apatosaurus ate plants of green.
(Pretend to pick and eat plants)
Diplodocus has the longest tail ever seen!

(Use hands, pretend to greedily gobble)
Compsognathus was little and fast on his feet.
(Run two fingers across front of body)
"Mighty Dinosaur"
(Starting position: with left arm bent upright at elbow, hold left hand
up with palm facing body and left thumb {the head!} extended. Right hand

palm. Position right hand slightly lower than left so that when the
right thumb is extended (the tail!), it is lower than left thumb.
Here is a dinosaur.
With tail and neck so long.
(wiggle both thumbs)
This dinosaur is mighty.
And strong!
(Keep hands together, move arms up and down)

Plants of green.
(Tilt arms to left, wiggle left thumb)
She's the biggest dinosaur
You've ever seen!
(Hands together, raise arms over head)
"Fog Bog"
(Optional: With older preschoolers and primary age children, take
advantage of the tongue twister last line by repeating all words and
actions faster and faster until children are giggly and unable to
follow.)
Right in the midst of a steamy fog,
(Hold hands over eyes, wiggle fingers)
A dinosaur fell into a muddy bog.
(Make a loose fist with a wide opening on top, poke index finger of
other hand down into opening)
He rolled around like a huge wooden log,
(Rapidly roll hands around each other)
And then leaped out like a giant frog.
(With index and middle fingers together, jump fingers up arm to
shoulder)
Fog, Bog, Log, Frog!
(As each word is recited, do corresponding action as shown above)
"Along the Way"
As I was going to school one day.
(Walk in place)
I met an/a *Apatosaurus along the way.
*Insert Diplodocus, Ankylasuarus, Tyrannosaurs, Corythosaurus,
Iguanodon, etc.)
He was big as a truck and tall as a tree.
(Spread arms wide horizontally and vertically)
And the very sight of him frightened me.
(Look scared)
I closed my eyes and dropped all my books.
(Close eyes)
And from head to toe, I shook, shook, shook.
(Keeps eyes closed, shake body)
As I listened to his steps come near.
(Keep eyes closed, touch ear)
My body shook faster and faster with fear.
(Shake body at a faster rate)
When I opened one eye to take a peek,
(Open one eye)
He took my hand and began to speak!
(Hold right arm up high, in handshake position)
(LOUDLY recite dinosaur text in an English accent)
He roared, "How do you do!"
(with hand up high, pretend to be shaking hands)
"It's been ever so lovely meeting you!"
As I was going to (repeat word from line one) one day,
(Walk in place)
I met a polite (*repeat dinosaur name) along the way.
"Zig-Zag"
I'm a Stegosaurus dinosaur. (use any dinosaur desired)
(Spread legs apart, slowly rock from side to side)
And I eat so much my tummy sags.
(Place hands beneath stomach, bend over)
My head flip flops
(Bob head first right and then left)
My tail wig wags
(Stick right hip out, then left)
And when I walk I go zig-zag.
(Slide right foot back ,repeat with left)
And when other dinos see me, they quickly run away!
(Run in place)
"Teh Iguanodons" (Use then fingerpuppets)
This is a swamp where all day
(Open arms wide)
Ten iguanodons are at play.
((Hold up ten fingers and wiggle)
Number one stamps his feet.
Number two bears his teeth.
Number three stretches his neck
Number four gives a tree a peck (Do appropriate motions for each)
Number five shakes his tail
Number six gives out a wail
Number seven sniffs the air
Number eight sits and stares
Number nine takes a giant leap
Number ten falls fast asleep.
So away all the rest quietly creep.
(Say above line in a whisper, hide hands behind back, tiptoe)
"5 Enormous Dinosaurs"
5 enormous dinosaurs (arms extend to sides)
Shouting out a roar (cup hands over mouth like megaphone)
Along came an alligator (move hand in wavy motion)
And then there were 4 (4 fingers)
4 enormous dinosaurs (arms extend to sides)
Sitting in a tree
Till the wind blew by (sweep hands across body)
And then there were 3
3 enormous dinosaurs (arms extend to sides)
Were taken to the zoo
Till one got away and then there were 2
2 enormous dinosaurs (arms extend to sides)
Were having lots of fun
Till one's mom called him home and then there was 1
One enormous dinosaur (arms extend to sides)
He must've weighed a ton
He left to get some food and then there were none!
