Something I've seen work well is to read a fairy tale. Before reading divide
the kids into groups with each group assigned a character from the story.
When the character's name is read the group makes a predetermined sound or
phrase. Such as the mean old witch (hisss) or the handsome prince (my hero).

Subject: Stumper-2 boys skinny dipping

Well here it is - my first request for help locating a book/series.
A patron remembers a series about 2 boys - takes place in the 40's. In
one of the books the boys get caught skinny dipping behind the church by
a girl and she takes their clothes. They break into the church & steal
women's clothing that is being stored for a goodwill drive. One boy may
be Henry. Male author w/3 names.

For a "National Pig Day" (March 1, I believe) celebration a number of years back, I recycled
pins by having the kids cover them with pink colored paper, glue on a button for a nose,
googly eyes, and little pink triangle ears. Enjoy :)

Subject: stumper: responsibilty books 1995 to present

A local professor has her children's literature students analyzing books
that pertain to responsibility. The books must have been written 1995 to
present. I checked A to Zoo, Children's Library Catalog, More Books Kids
Will Sit Still For, and Best Books for Children. Does anyone have any
suggestions? Most of the children's literature people would probably
appreciate picture book suggestions as they generally don't want to read
the longer books I have found, but any suggestions are welcome.

Also, if you know of any books addressing the issue of responsibility in
children's literataure (or journal articles in particular), my patrons
would be most happy.

My email is sbrinson@cumberland.lib.nc.us.

Thanks in advance.

Hi, I apologize because I think this question was just on the list and I did not
pay attention to it. A patron wants to find the name of a book about a

all bring him cards. She read it to her daughter when she was little
(probably about 20+ years ago). Please send the answer to

Sixth Annual Reference Research Forum
at the
2000 American Library Association Annual Conference
in Chicago

This is an opportunity to present and discuss your research project covering the broad area of reference services such as user behavior, electronic services, reference effectiveness, and organizational structure and personnel. Both completed research and research in progress will be considered. All researchers, including reference practitioners from all types of libraries, library school faculty and students, and other interested individuals are encouraged to submit a proposal.

The Committee will utilize a "blind" review process to select a maximum of three (3) projects for 25 minute presentations, followed by open discussion. The selected researchers are expected to present their papers in person at the forum. Criteria for selection are:

· Significance of the study for improving the quality of reference service
· Quality and creativity of the methodology
· Potential for research to fill a gap in reference knowledge or to build on previous studies
· Previously published research or research accepted for publication by December 1, 1998 will not be acceptable

Please submit a one-page proposal by December 1, 1999. Notification of acceptance will be made by March 15, 2000. The submission must consist of no more than two pages.
