Recently, a group of prominent Americans issued a statement decrying
violence in entertainment that they called an "Appeal to Hollywood."
While there is certainly much to criticize in the media, this appeal
is likely to do more harm than good. By promoting the idea that
violent imagery causes crime and should be suppressed, it encourages
government censorship.
We join in the call to Hollywood executives to provide the highest
quality entertainment possible. We also urge them to resist the
pressure to create taboos, villainize art and artists, and constrain

head while the family takes a drive in the country. Friends find the hat
and put it on their scarecrow.
She would be so grateful to find this book again. the family read it a

Subject: Windigo stumper answers
Thanks to you folks out there who answered my stumper about the Windigo scary
story.
Following is a list of sources for the story.
Martha Simpson, Stratford (CT) Library
****
There were 2 recent picture books
released that are versions of the legend of the Windigo. _The legend of the
Windigo_ by Gayle Ross who also has performed it on tape. And _The
Windigo's return, a North Woods story_ by Douglas Wood. Many northern
tribes have similar legends about a scary monster that is a cannibal, gets
tricked into being burned in a pit of fire, and comes back as mosquitos or
biting black flies to "eat you 1 bite at a time".
It is the Windago (I'm not sure of the spelling also.) There are
many different version, some taking place in the US and some in the
Himalayans (sp).
The basic story is that two hunters hire a guide to take them out. During
the night and day you can hear the wind howling. The guide is acting very
scared. Eventually the guide cannot stand it any longer one night and takes
off. The next morning the hunters go looking for the guide. They follow
his footsteps in the snow until they just seem to disappear. The hunters do
make it back home safely.
The next year one of the hunters goes back and thinks that he sees the guide
in an inn. When he approaches the shell of a man he finds that the man has
no feet.
The story of the windago is that it calls and calls for you and you must
follow the sound of the call. You follow so fast that you become the wind
and burn your feet off.
Of course if you can find it in a book, the story will take a little longer,
but thats the basics.
****
If you do a search on "wendigo" instead of "windago", you
might turn some
up additional titles.
Here are some collections that contain a wendigo
story. I'm afraid I can't tell you which one is the one your patron is
looking for.
CAMPFIRE CHILLERS ("The Wendigo" by Algernon Blackwood) edited by E.M.
Freeman
CLASSIC CHILLERS ("The Wendigo" by Algernon Blackwood) edited by E.M.

GHOSTWISE: A BOOK OF MIDNIGHT STORIES collected by Dan Yashinsky ("Wendigo
at Widow Helferty's House" by Joan Finnigan)
GHOSTLY TALES TO BE TOLD: A COLLECTION OF STORIES FROM THE GREAT MASTERS,
ARRANGED FOR READING AND TELLING ALOUD edited by Basil Davenport ("The
Wendigo" by Algernon Blackwood")
THE LOST VALLEY AND OTHER STORIES by Algernon Blackwood ("The Wendigo")
MONSTERS OF NORTH AMERICA by William Wise (probably not stories, more
like a discussion of whether or not monsters exist and what their
traits are)
THE SCARY STORY READER collected by Richard and Judy Dockrey Young
("Terror of Our Nation:Wendigo")
SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK collected and retold by Alvin Schwartz
("Wendigo")
THE WORLD OF MANABOZHO: TALES OF THE CHIPPEWA INDIANS by Thomas B. Leekley
("The Fight with the Wendigo")
Now, I know that this isn't the version your patron is looking for, but if
he is interested in Wendigo tales, this is an amazing story to read. It's
from the book MONSTER TALES: VAMPIRES, WEREWOLVES, AND THINGS ("Wendigo's
Child" by Thomas F. Monteleone)

Take a look at the following site. It has the a story about the Wendago
and cites where a reader can find the tale and the author.

Hi!
My name is Amy Lilien-Harper and I mostly lurk, but I have a real stumper
that I can't seem to find. I looked in most of the ususal sources and was
unable to find it.
The patron believes it was called something like _The Pied Piper_ and she
read it about thirty years ago. It was a fiction book about a man
travelling in Europe right around the time of the start of a war.
(Probably World War II, or maybe world war I.) He is heading back to
England and is asked to take a child with him (presumable to safety) and
over the course of his travels ends up with several more children (perhaps
eight?) to bring back with him.
That is all that she remembers. If anyone has any ideas about what book
this is, I would be very grateful, as would she. You have all been a great
help in the past, and I am hoping that this one rings a bell with one of
you well-read librarians.
Thanks so much!
