Dear PUBYACkers,
This is the first message from the new PUBYAC server to the full
complement of subscribers. We are 3079 subscribers strong now. The
converting of the subscriber list went fairly well, with only a few
glitches. I can see that many of you are already using the new posting
address: pubyac@prairienet.org
Remember, I cannot convert old PUBYAC postings into the new format. I
noticed a few of you still sending to the old address, and I'll send out
those posting today, but DON'T reply to the old address at Nysernet.
Today will be the final day for sending out from the old address.
I will convert the web page's instructions on Monday (after Dell
comes to change out my CD-ROM drive) so that there aren't conflicting
directions.
Thank you for your patience in this switch.

Does anyone have the One Nation Books series of the fifty states? What do
you think of them? We need to order a new set of state books for our
collection. Any others that are exceptional?
Thank you!

Has anyone got a good booktalk for "Adventures of Blue Avenger" that
they
wouldn't mind sharing? I read it, really liked it, and put it aside to
write something. But in the weeks since then, I have been unable to capture
the flavor of the book and do it justice. And now it's been so long that I
think I've forgotten key "hook" moments, so I'm doubly at a loss.
I thought as I read it of how much it reminded me of "Holes", so that
was
an aspect I did want to mention. But I didn't do a very good job on
booktalking "Holes" either. :/
Thanks in advance,
Miriam

I believe that the definition of historical fiction is that when the book was
written it was written about a the past. So, a book written today about the
Gulf War would be historical fiction. Hope that helps!

I am responding to the list, because I want to let everyone know about my
web site, Book Arts for Kids (www.fastband.com/~anthill/bkartkid.html) for
an extended bibliography on making books and handmade paper FOR children.
There are also a few good web links. I appreciate any feedback, especially
recommendations for books and web links. I've used accordian books as a
craft several times with kids of all ages. This structure is very easy,
but holds infinite possibilities. I also had a very successful two part
journal making program last summer, with mostly 9 year olds. We made a
simple, single signature book with a paper cover and decorated it with
markers, cool reflective tape and feathers. At the next session, the
children did writing exercises. If you would like more ideas, I find
Multicultural Books to Make and Share by Susan Kapuscinski Gaylord
(bibliographic info in the "grownups" section of my webpage)
indespensible. If you have any detailed questions, please respond to me
personally. Good luck!

Please let me know. Thanks

I always brag about the best pictures in the library being in the Easy
collection, so I gathered picture books about art (inspired by a message
on this listserv!) from our state-wide system, & they were gorgeous. I
chose some for grades 4, 5 & 6 (three different sets), 'though it was hard
to narrow it down. My husband (not a librarian) asked how the kids in the
back would be able to see these fantastic pics. We borrowed a video
camera & placed the books against a music stand covered with a table cloth
& he filmed the pictures, zooming in etc. While filming, I murmered the
text & would warn him when I was going to turn the page. When I visited
school classes, all of which have a VCR, I muted the sound & read-aloud
the books. Some kids watched the screen & others watched me (& most did
both; I didn't feel I had less eye contact than if I'd just read the books
without a video). It was a bit like a concert with a big screen behind
the performer. I was going to write the teachers afterwards to ask their
opinion because I needed a little help from them, more than if I didn't
use the VCR, but I got a beautiful letter from a principal praising the
idea and a batch of letters from a class from a different school that told
me it was a successful idea. I've never heard of anyone doing that
before. Of course, the bigger the TV monitor, the better it works, but
when students are arranged very wide in a class, it was quite useful, &
all are so hooked on viewing screens that they felt right at home.
