Bonnie, we only purchase Recorded Books Read Along Packs and/or Book

Tapes. Some of our reasons are because they are unabridged and have a

good replacement policy, but practically speaking another is because of

the packaging. We have ours on a book shelf. They have spine labels

just like books. Even though its not "mandated" that we only order from

Recorded Books, most branches prefer this company.

Am I the only one who finds that publishers seem to be at least a few

years behind on subject updates? For example I'm currently looking for at

least one first aid book for our children's collection that includes such

safety issues as the need to wear gloves when coming in contact with

another person's blood. Plate Tectonics was another one that I knew needed

to be updated but I couldn't find anything new, now of course I have 3 or

4 titles with copyright dates int he last year or two.

Sorry for that last garbled message about subject area updates I meant to

cancel it so I could rewrite the message more coherently. I think I had

better stop I'm not doing any better this time either.

We purchased a bilingual alphabet rug in bright primary colors from

Childcraft. I believe I have also seen rugs of this type in the Demco

catalogs, but Childcraft has a better selection. We receive many

compliments about our rug, which was a gift from the Friends of the Library.

I've gotten a grant to provide books for agencies that serve low-income

families. Part of the grant includes a free book coupon redeemable at the

library. The grantee wants me to track if those people then become regular

library users. Short of being a library police and spying on their records,

which I consider an invasion of privacy, I'm not coming up with a good idea

of how to do this. Has anyone done a similar project and do you have any

tips for me? TIA---

The demco/highsmith catalog has some large rugs you might want to look at.

Also, at PLA/ALA there have been some suppliers with these types of rugs.

Has anyone attending one of Dr Peggy Sharp's Seminars?

The literature makes her sound pretty exciting. It

also sounds like the presentation is mainly geared to

school librarians and teachers. Anyone from a public

library have any comments after seeing her? You can

respond to me directly at bjanssen@aclibrary.org.

Jeri:

_The Cure_ by Sonia Levitin has a similar premise to _The Giver_, although

the portion that takes place in the future is not as compelling and fleshed

out as the major portion of the novel, which takes place in 14th century

Stuttgart. Check it out -- a very strong read.

Dear collective brains,

A 40-year-old patron is interested in finding a copy of (or more information

on) a picture book. He is fairly certain is was called The Boy Who Ate

Flowers. He read it in the 60's as a child, but doesn't know how old it was

at the time. It was about a boy who would eat nothing but flowers, and his

parents tried to make him eat other things. It doesn't appear in Amazon.com

(I searched with multiple word combinations) or BIP.

Any ideas would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance and happy holidays

:)

This is a message for Sue in Santa Monica, who emailed me off-list about how

to monitor users on the Internet--keeping track of how long they have been

on. Actually, our computer services supervisor gave me the web address of

one kind of software that does that--if you (or anyone else, for that

matter) are interested, I can give you the address off list--I just lost

your email! I must have deleted it somehow. But I'll save the information

until I hear from you, one way or the other.

Happy Holidays!
