Dear Digested PUBYACkers,

On Saturday I asked if you wanted your digests to come chopped into

digests of 40,000 bytes, or to come at midnight in one large message.

Your votes are in: 85 for size, 30 for midnight. I stated that majority

rules.

So I am changing the configuration. The listprocessor should kick out

a digest whenever it reaches 40,000 bytes. I'm not sure how literal it

will be, whether it will chop a message right in half or not. Should the

next "half" be less than 40,000 bytes, the remainder should be kicked out

at midnight. This is what my documentation states, at least.

If you want to return to individual messages, send this command:

set pubyac mail ack

to listproc@prairienet.org

Here's hoping this works with no glitches....

Hi. I'd like people's opinions on drawing kids into a program. We have an

After School Assitance Program which is supposed to help kids with reading

and writing (grades 1-6). The program is twice a week. The activities

vary, from crossword puzzles, making comic strips, newscasts (where they

videotaped themselves), picture stories and lots of other fun activities.

Despite our advertsing attempts, through the school and library, kids are

not attending. Does anyone have any ideas on how to entice the kids?

Thanks in advance.

Would anyone who has hosted a teen mystery night please share your =

experiences: how many kids came, did you assign teams instead of =

individuals, how many staff were needed, how did you handle dinner, etc? =

Also, have you tried the adult kits with older teens? Thanks in =

advance!

Just a comment on The Giver--When it first came out, I could not get kids

to read it because of the cover. That includes many of my YAAC kids. It was

only after it won the Newbery that kids became interested in it. I do agree

that now it could have a class-A binding or brown paper cover, and it would

fly off the shelves! I wonder how many other people had this experience of

having difficulty getting kids to read it due to the cover, until it won

the Newbery?

The Cure has a similar premise to the Giver, but IMHO, it is not nearly as

strong. The historical part is great and could have been a story in itself.

I thought the futuristic-Sci/fi element was unnecessary. It's definitely a

worthwhile read, but probably not Levitin's best work.

Just thought I would throw in my 2 cents worth.

I am planning my first spaghetti story time. I am looking for spaghetti

fingerplays (or even pasta or macaroni). i can't seem to find any. i've

checked "Ring a Ring of Roses," "Library Story Hour from A-Z," "Picture Book

Story Times," and others. Any ideas of fingerplays would be *greatly*

appreciated. I already have some great book ideas and a craft ideas, so

fingerplays are what I need. Please send your ideas to

elainem@worldnet.att.net. Thank you very much!

Elaine

To those asking about a follow-up book to THE GIVER, I can share some

joy with you. Lois Lowry presented the Anne Carroll Moore Lecture here

at the New York Public Library in November. She revealed that she is

writing a "companion" book to THE GIVER. We were thrilled with the

news.
