Just a query to those who have been having Harry Potter programs. Where
does copyright come in here? Have you written the author or publisher
(American or British) for permission for anything? How do you give credit
on publicity posters or brochures?

We're thinking of having a Harry Potter Day and I would appreciate some
guidelines. TIA

hope that helps!

Does anyone have any outreach programs that focus on at-risk kids
during the summer months when they are not in school? We are interested
in ways of reaching these kids and their families all year round.
Please send replies to me personally.
Thank you for your help!

Two kids' search services that many schools and libraries have linked to
have undergone such changes for the worse that I've removed them from our
Kids Search Tool page at:
http://www.rcls.org/ksearch.htm

1) Ask Jeeves for Kids used to search against a database of sites selected
by AJK staff, and there was an option to run the search terms against a much
larger database screened by the Bess filter.
Now, AJK searches are run first against Encyclopedia.com entries. The
search result screen also then lists pay-access citations from the Electric
Library service. Then, the search is run against other kids search services.
Last week I saw thyat these included Yahooligans and Education world, but
this week I only see Yahooligans.
In effect, AJK has outsourced their entire search service. My advice is
to go directly to Encyclopedia.com or Yahooligans, and not frustrate your
patrons with fee-based hits from Electric Library.
2) Remember Disney's DIG? It disappeared months ago, about the time that
Disney and Infoseek combined to form the GO Network. GO's regular search
service supports a filter option (GOGuardian), but the only real collection
of searcharble sites selected for kids exists in GO Kids Homework Helper.
Unfortunately, the only search terms that will produce hits are very broad
school subjects. And the database they search against appears to be a mere
handful of homework help sites. A few weeks ago, GO Kids offered a neat
search subsets: a Toon Site Finder and a Video Game Site Finder. Where are
they now? Gone.
So both AJK and GO Homework Help have been removed from our search page.On
an up note, Scholastic has gotten into the kids web site search business,
and has been added to our page.

Hello everyone! I have recently become part of my library's database
committee. I'm supposed to review electronic resources and make suggestions
for purchase. Specifically, I'm looking at databases in the area's of
general reference and children's/YA.

This task is a bit overwhelming and I could use some help getting started.
Are there any databases that make your life (or those of your patrons)
easier and you just love? Databases that you'd *never* recommend? Any
wisdom would be greatly appreciated. Please e-mail any suggestions to me at
sspurgeo@hotmail.com. TIA for your help!

We are having a poetry slam/coffee house in April and my director insists we
name it. I have rejected the Lava Lamp Cafe, the warehouse cafe, and the
Pink Flamingo. I just want something simple. I mean, real coffee houses
just have coffee related names, and I wouldn't mind it being poetry related.
And most are just run down with old furniture. They want a theme. What
have some of you named your cafes? Or are there any new ideas? Thanks.

I have a patron who is a Girl Scout leader who is looking for a skit
about the Loch Ness Monster for her girls to do. I have checked

Do you have any suggestions.

I plan on giving her a couple of easy books that she could adapt to

Hello, All:
I have a patron who has read Julie Lawson's "Goldstone" which was
published by Stoddart 1997 (paperback). In it is says that this is part of
a trilogy. I've checked "Reading In Series," SATA, and Vandergrift's
author pages with no success. Does anyone know what the other two titles
are in this trilogy?
Thanks,
