Hi again! FYI..My library uses a CD called "Type to Learn" that kids
actually enjoy. It is version 1.26 and published by Sunburst Communications
in 1999. There are typing classes and typing games.

My library is considering a subscription to the online version of Rock Hill Press' publication Online-Offline. In the past, we ordered the print version but never received any copies, so we are a bit leery of trying out this new format. Has anyone subscribed successfully to the electronic version? Is it easy to use and updated frequently? Do you have the print subscription as well and do you think it's necessary to have the print subscription?

Any thoughts about whether this is a worthwhile service would be welcome.

Dear Shalar,

How about, to the tune of "The More We Get (Read, Sing, Play) Together" when
you get to the part where it says, "where my friends are your friends and
your friends are my friends" you could sing "...the happier we'll be. With
Alex and Mary and Betsy and Johnny and Alice and Susan (etc) the more we
(Play, Read, Sing, Get) together the happier we'll be!" Sounds like it
should be a fun group!

Well, I'd say a most interesting , and mostly true point of view. Fascinating is the fact that is pointed out, that girls can imagine themselves in any role whereas the boys cannot. What do we do now? Maybe the great females are yet to be heard from in future installments. But for now, I'll purse my lips and continue to follow the rules...Anne

There is a very interesting article in Salon about how sexist the Harry Potter books are. I heard Rowlings say once that she writes what she has to write, and can't chnage things just because readers feel she should, but I think the author of the article has some valid points. The URL is

Valerie,
I have been running discussion groups for 3 years, and I find that
feeding the kids is a great idea. We used to be "Books and Bagels" until
I was unable to get bagels and supplied donuts instead. The kids
unanimously preferred donuts, so I told them we had to rename our group.
They chose "Chat 'n Chew". select books that have something
controversial to discuss, such as Wringer,Afternoon of the Elves, Tuck
Everlasting. I try not to worry too much about whether or not the kids
like the books. Many times we discuss why they didn't care for a
particular selection, and they keep coming back. This age group is
easier to attract than young teens.

Does everyone realize this book is really a "reillustrated" reissue?
Has anyone seen the "original" book first published in 1977? We have
both copies here and I did a page by page comparison. The end page
of the new version discusses why the Taback chose to spiff up his
work. He didn't do much to change things. The cut outs in the
original were in identical spots, the only changes were minor--color
scheme, animals, placement of furniture, etc.
To me this DOES NOT constitute a whole new book which is DISTINCT!
I realize many of you don't have either the old or the new to
compare. If you get a chance though, it's interesting to look at
both side by side.
I just don't get it....

The public libraries in our area are using a pirate theme this summer. We
are of course looking for great ideas to share. Information on programs
like Pennsylvania's 1997 Be a Bookaneer program, Calgary's "Whale of a
Tale" program from 1998, or the midwest 1999 Cooperative Summer Library
Program "Treasure Your Library" would be most helpful.

We have already looked at the items in Upstart, Demco, US Toy, Oriental
Trading, KIPP, Harcourt Outlines, Smilemakers and Classroom Supplies to
develop a list of items to purchase. Now we need to find items to put
together a manual filled with booklists, games, puzzles, clip art,
fingerplays, songs, and anything else we can find. If you have any items,
or suggestions that we can utilize, please let me know.

I don't know if this will help you or now, but here I go. In our library,
even in the summer, most of our children's patrons are not older than second
grade. But most of the books they really enjoy seem to be about cats and
dogs. I have done two programs recently that have been quite popular. Maybe
they'll give you a spring board.

1. McDuff. I love McDuff, myself. It has had good appeal here for kids
three to about seven, depending on the child. I did a story time with
several McDuff books. I then made up a "search and find" sheet on the
computer with McDuff's house, himself and a little scenery of where he
goes...help him home kind of thing. It was very simple but well received.

2. I have also recently purchased some Kipper series books. I know many
librarians aren't thrilled with the TV connection. My feeling is if I can
get them turned on to this, I can sneak something else in. I went into
Kipper's web site (Nick, Jr.) and got some reallly cute sheets. I also took
the kids to the computer to show them how to find him. They have some cute
animation. It introduces them to use the computer and has helped some of the
older kids do independent searches.

For older kids, I'd try to tie computer independence in with popular series
books and ALL of them have one or two with a family pet theme.

Good luck!

We are looking for information about cultural institutions that have

Our library had a tea party hosted by a local woman who runs a tea company

made herbal tea for the kids to taste. We had the kids decorate their own
cookies for a snack. It was fun, and the parents who joined us for tea

A troup of boy scouts are going to be visiting our library on Friday and
they have to do a project that involves finding out what historical events
happened on their birthday. _Chase's Annual Events_ only lists historical
happenings for every day but it doesn't narrow it down to specific years,
such as July 7, 1989. Does anybody know of a website where you can search
for year as well as date to find out what happened on that particular day?
I'd appreciate any responses...

the Caldecott winner. Needless to say, we immediately ordered multiple
copies. The first actual review of it that I saw was in the January

I sent off an order for "Joseph" the day before I left for ALA - I had
