We have a patron who remembers a picturebook from her youth (about 50 years ago) and would like to track it down. The story (or folktale?) is about an older woman who wears a large number of petticoats. Somehow in the story she uses them to help children (her own?) or people. Patron remembers the cover of the book showing this woman with a very full skirt and some kids hiding behind it. It may be called "A Hundred Petticoats." We have tried searching our catalog as well as Storyteller's Sourcebook and picked the brains of the children's staff in our library system. Any leads would be helpful! I am in need of some collective wisdom. A patron came in the other day with the following story. I am hoping that someone out there can help me out because I haven't heard of any such book. The patron's son was approached by a woman about drawings for a book. The boy, at that time was 7. According to this patron, the woman had seen some of the boy's drawings and thought he would make an excellent artist for a children's book. The pictures deal with a pickle family. Everything is a pickle, the people, cars, trees, etc. The patron cannot remember the name of the woman but was just wondering if the books were ever published. Does this ring a bell with anyone? If so, please respond to me personally. The father just wants to know if the boy received any credit for the pictures if such books were published. Thanks for any ideas anyone may have. You would be a member of an innovative creative team that is committed to bringing great programming and library services to the kids of our town. We even have formed our own puppet troupe, "Pegasus Players", and we try to do 2-3 shows a year. We also received a California State Library grant to develop our Young Adult section so we are busy buying materials and designing new program ideas. Above all, we have a great time and want someone to join us who is enthusiastic about outreach and creative programming (we don't expect you to walk on water, though) You can get the details from our City website: http://www.ci.ssf.ca.us/jobs/lib1ja.pdf or you can contact me directly at phone (650) 829-3861 for more details. My premise will be that children's literature reflects society. I hope to bring lots of picture books to illustrate this and help spur a discussion. I would dearly appreciate any titles you'd be willing to share. I'd like examples that help illustrate the changing portrayal of women in children's literature. Thank you.
