Dear Collective Minds,
One of the frequent requests in our children's room is for books on
role reversal and gender identity. This most certainly is not in A to
Zoo. I know that WIlliam's Doll by Charlotte Zolotow and My Mom Travels
a Lot by Caroline Bauer fit into this category, but I would like to have
several more easy titles as well as some for the older children. I will
compile any titles I get. Thank you.

I hope someone can clear this up for me. I am updating our ready reference
notebook with the current award winners. On the ALSC Carnegie Medal page,
there are two 1999 winners listed. I knew that The First Christmas won for
1999. Is Miss Nelson has a field day the 2000 winner? If it is, it is
erroneously labeled. Or, is it an honorable mention? I couldn't find any
other reference to the award doing a web search and a search through our
periodical database. If you can give the correct answer, please respond to
me directly. Thank you. TD

I've read it. I love it, but am responding to a teacher's need for
information about it. I work in a public library, so my role is typically
as "defender" rather than "challenger." I agree with your plea for
intellectual freedom, but I'm not looking to join in a challenge but to
fill a request for information.

The first is about a rag doll who continually gets lost throughout the
book. She is taken by a dog, caught in a jam jar, a laundry and an
attic. The patron believes it was written in the 1950's and that the
doll has two names, 1 may be Amelia.

The last is a historical fiction set in Norway during WWII. The
Norwegians have a bunch of gold they are trying to keep away from the
Nazis and young people begin taking the bars one at a time on their
sleds to a safe place. This title is perhaps 30 years old.

We have looked in all the usual places, the Best Books series, A to Zoo,
etc. I'm really just hoping someone remembers either of these.

Hello Everyone,

I had a patron come in today looking for Tom Sawyer picture books. I
looked in A to Zoo and Best Books for Children and found nothing. Any
titles you could suggest would be appreciated. We only have copies of
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer in our young adult and adult collection.
Thanks for your help.

3/1/00

Many thanks to Ian McKinney, Becky Ann Smith, Diana Valentine, Amy Young, Nancy
Schutz, and Eleanor Hendricks for adding to my already lengthy bibliography of
child/domestic abuse books.

The finished list turned out to be over 450 lines of type long--it's a monster.
If anyone would like a copy, please e-mail me at JC_Maryse@4cty.org. The list
includes titles, authors, dates of publication, number of pages, and a brief
summary for as many books as I could find. There are also a couple of video
titles.

Thanks again, everyone.
