This seems a bit strange to me - kind of like taking the 'spice' out of
the Spice Girls. We all know that what most pop stars are selling to their
young (and not so young) audiences is sex, so trying to turn Ricky Martin
into a stand-in for John Boy Walton sends a mixed message, to say the
least. You don't say what age
of children usually attends your programmes, but I would rethink the whole
thing myself...

Greetings to the list,

Would any children's librarians be willing to share a typical month's
circulation statistics with me (e.g. how many e's went out, how much
non-fiction, how much junior fiction, just the most basic categories). Our
library serves a small town, so statistics from either a small library or a
branch would be most helpful. Circulation is improving, but I'd like to get
an idea of what is "normal" so I have something to compare where we are with
where we should be...By the way, to give you an idea of how helpful Pubyacers
have been, I posted quite awhile back asking for ideas for a Mother Goose
storytime. Thanks to your help, my storytime was so successful that what had
been set-up as a one-time performance for the migrant Headstart instead
became a weekly gig, and a lasting relationship was formed. Thank you!

Thanks in advance for your time and your generosity of spirit!

Jamie,
You are not being cranky. In my absence on education leave, my
replacement ordered electric library. I had to email a request for
archival information. I am not impressed with the interface, it is not at
all intuitive. They say they update daily, but I have had difficultly
finding "yesterday's news". I have to consult the list to find out how
they have entered the titles of various books before I can do a limited
search. The index is not particularly strong. "British Columbia
Premier" brought up no hits on the new premier of British Columbia. The
almanacs are out of date. Why look at a 1998 almanac when the CIA version
is free online. I find EL more difficult to use than Ebsco and far more
difficult than Search Bank (Infotrac).
I would not recommend it.

Gidday from Australia's Red Centre!
I'm hoping someone out there in cyberspace will be able to help me. I'm
tearing my hair out over children's, and particularly young adult,
magazines! I buy all these beautiful and interesting magazines, and within
a few weeks - sometimes only days - they are destroyed! What do others do
in their libraries to avoid this? I have tried security tagging them,
stapling the pages in, putting the Library stamp over all the pop star/movie
stars faces, but nothing seems to work!
Help......please?

Latanya:
I also work for a small library where kids are sent until school is out at
3:30p.m. until the library closes at 8 p.m.! No librarian that I know of
gets paid daycare wages on top of their library wages. Yet, through the
eyes of these children's parents we are the "glorified latchkey program"
and I am sick of it.
We have tried after school programs and they work for the younger children
but, the children who are older want something to do. They do not
necessarily
like to talk about books or read books for that matter.
Just yesterday alone I had to ask two 12 year-old boys to leave Kid's Place
because they were throwing wooden puzzle pieces at one another. If they
were to get hurt, I would have parents upset with me. On the other hand, I
am responsible for the safety of the other children, so this is the main
reason
I asked them to leave.
We have a policy regarding unattended children but, to me that policy is no
good
unless ALL THE STAFF obeserves it. (I can't be the main enforcer.)
Hopefully, other Pubyacers out there have some good suggestions regarding
this subject. Good Luck to you Latanya and to all librarians who are faced
with
this growing after school problem.

Hi there,

I had two issues to bring up. The first being a BIG thanks to all who
contributed to my request for information about middle school children.
My paper is complete, turned in and has been highly praised. Thanks for
you who made it great.

The second being my 2 cents worth on the issue of program registration.
We have tried it both ways. I am head of Youth Services at a new library
in Broward County. All statistics for this library are about 5 times
greater than anyone ever expected. Storytimes included. We started out
with a registration. Storytimes were full before we ever got to the
second day of registration let alone the first session. Parents left
upset and unhappy (even if they did get registered). It only fostered a
major ill will toward our library. We then opened it to no
registration. Parents are much more happy, less defensive and they don't
have to fight to get a spot. We average around 65, adults and children.
It is a large group so we use two librarians. One does the program the
other has a 'bit part'. Everyone is much happier and numbers have not
gotten out of hand. Hope this helps. I just think the preregistration
think can cause more headache than it's worth.

If you have Books in Print on CD-ROM, its advantages over Amazon or Barnes and
Noble are:
1. It automatically lists in reverse chronological order, rather than in order
of copies sold by that website or alphabetically. This is useful when you only
want recent books.
2. Barnes & Noble cannot be searched by age level and subject at the same time.
Amazon can, in the advanced search mode, but the resulting lists are very
incomplete.
3. Books in Print allows boolean searching for keyword and age level at the
same time.
4. Only Books in Print allows searching by publisher's name.
Of course, none of this applies to the book version of BIP.

Hi Pubyac members -
I am looking for a source for large books with single items
illustrated on each page that would be appropriate for a storytime
class for 3-23 month old children. We have been using regular board
books but when there are 20-25 babies and their parents attending the
circle gets large and not everyone can see the pictures. I've
checked the "Big Books" series but the titles I've found are not
appropriate for this young age. If anyone knows of any
publishers that have such books, I'd really appreciate the help! You

We had a medieval srp one year and made construction paper crowns for the
boys and the tall cone shaped princess hats for the girls. The girls were
made from heavy card stock with tissue paper for the veil. The boys
decorated theirs with colors and stickers. They turned out real cute.

Pamela, how much time are you going to be able to devote to an aquarium?
And how much money? My best friend keeps a 55 gallon freshwater aquarium,
and it seems she is constantly checking the pH balance of the water,
changing the water, and treating the fish if it looks like they might be
coming down with something. Plus, she has to make sure that any new fish
she introduces are a compatible species with the regulars.

Maybe you could work out a deal with the local pet store and have them set
it up and maintain it in exchange for a small card promoting their store
attached to the aquarium.

Hi All,

I usually try to solve these myself, but this one was just too much for me.

The patron is looking for a book about a woman in either Ireland or
Scotland (she says there were clans, so we think Scotland) who is trying to
learn to be a witch, but doesn't have the gift. She thinks two of the
characters were named Kelpie and Ian. She read the book in the late
sixties or early seventies. She thinks the title is something like Witch
of the Moors. (It is not Witch of Blackbird pond.)

I know it isn't much to go on, but I thought it might ring a bell with
someone. I tried our computer catalog, Amazon, Best Books for Children and
Best Books for Young Adults. I am thinking that it is out of print and or
an adult book and that is why I am not finding it.

Any help at all would be apreciated!

Thanks in advance!

The book written in the 1950's telling the story of the adventurous doll
was Angelina Amelia by Henrietta Jones Moon. We do not own a copy, but
since the patron wanted to purchase her own we found her one on
bibliofind.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions.

Government report: Law enforcement needs new tools to combat Net crime

http://www.freedomforum.org/news/2000/03/2000-03-10-01.asp

"Internet industry executives hailed the cautious approach, but the American Civil Liberties Union warned that the government's report contains
recommendations 'that would strip away basic privacy, free speech and free press protections.'"

Subject: Stumper-biography series
Date: Sat, 11 Mar 2000 13:39:35 CST

Hi all-
Hope you can help me with this one. A patron partially remembers a 1950s
series of short biographies of famous American historical figures for
children. In her estimation they were short enough that kids could check
out and read 2 or 3 a week. She recalls that the books had orange covers
and thought that they were referred to as the "Gold Books." She also seemed
to think they were published by "Littleton." I thought of the Childhood of
Famous Americans series, but their covers are blue, they were published by
Bobbs-Merrill, and I cannot find anything that comes close to "Gold" book or
Littleton as a publisher (perhaps Little Brown?). I have searched
Bibiofind, our catalog, & Bowker's 'Biographical Books'. I'd like to look
at something called American Historical Fiction and Biography for Children
and Young People by Jeanette Hotchkiss, but we don't own it. I don't have
much to go on; I hope this sketchy description will ring a bell from
someone's childhood. TIA

Here are the results I received from my request for a Cowboy/Cowgirl
theme.
The latest ACORN magazine, Copycat May/June 1999 (desert) and June/July
1995 Crayola Kids have a cowboy theme.

Website: http://www.nuttinbutkids.com/wildwest.html

Games and activities:
A stick horse rodeo with a barrel race or relay race
"How to make a stick horse" activity flyer available from Grace
Slaughter
gslaughter@bham.lib.al.us
Awards for best dressed cowboy/girl, most original, blackest, brownest
horse, etc.
Make "cowboy vests" from brown paper bags and color decorations (badges)

Cut out cows from brown paper with three different brands on them. Make
three corrals
With the one of the brands at each corral, let the kids "round up the
cattle"
Use a white sheet and cut it into triangles, stamp with cowboy themed
stamps and use as
Bandanas
Attach poster board horse heads to yard sticks for stick horses
Play the "pony express" game: fill brown paper bags with nespaper, the
object is to pass
The bag down a line of people without using their hands
Print star badges with the word "sheriff" on them
Cut horseshoes out of cardboard and let kids color and decorate them
Play horseshoes with plastic horseshoes
Play pin the tail on the horse, pin the saddle on the horse, pin the hat
on the cowboy
Give kids rope to practice lassoes
Play musical chairs to cowboy music
Do a version of Simon Says as if they were cowboys putting on their
bandanas, hats,
boots, riding on their horse and sleeping under the stars
Cow pie throwing contest, paint twp paper plates brown, stuff with paper
and staple

Songs:
"I’ve been riding on the range" (I’ve been working on the railroad)
I’ve been riding on the range, all the livelong day
I’ve been riding on the range, herding dogies on their way
Can’t you hear the cowboys shouting "Yippity-oh-ky-yay"
Can’t you hear the cowboys shouting "Dogies, move this way"

"Move on little dogies" (My bonnie lies over the ocean)
All day I ride on the prairie. All night I sleep on the ground.
Oh I’m a roaming cowboy, who travels around and around.
Move on, move on. Move on, little dogies, move on, move on.
Move on, move on. Move on, little dogies, move on.

Thank you all for responding to my stumper about
Granny Glittens. The story can be found in the Tall
Book of Christmas selected by Dorothy Hall Smith
(Harper & Row, 1954) and in the Golden Christmas Book
(Simon & Schuster, 1947). I was able to inteloan the
Tall Book of Christmas for my patron. She was
thrilled. Thanks especially to Mary Ferris who
emailed a copy of the story and to all of you who
offered to send a copy.

(This is being crossposted to YALSA-BK and PUBYAC, so I apologize for
duplication.)

Folks,

I asked a few months ago whether the booklists compiled by folks on this
list were posted on the web anywhere for people to access. Since the
response was silence, and since the archives for these lists are not
(currently) available on the web, I thought I would make them available
myself. While putting together the web site, I took a look at many web
sites dealing with booklists for YAs, including the YA sites in public and
school libraries... and got a little ambitious...

So here's a *long* index of all the booklists for YAs I could find on the
web. I hope you find it to be a useful resource. It's available on the
web at:

http://www.seemore.mi.org/booklists/

It includes some pathfinders for nonfiction subjects, as well as many
topic-focused fiction and nonfiction booklists.

*Many* admiring smiles to all the YA librarians who put together so many
functional, attractive web sites for their patrons!

Comments, suggestions and additions from "real live librarians" (as I am
not) are very welcome.

I will continue to archive booklists from PUBYAC/YALSA-BK on that web site
until someone complains to me, or lets me know they don't want their lists
on the web.
