I am researching a book for Highsmith Press on work projects for teens in the public library. If your library has a program where teens can do: 1) their community service educational requirement 2) their service learning requirement or 3) work off deliquent fines, and you are willing to discuss it, please contact me, Steve Weiner, at: SWEINER@MLN.LIB.MA.US Each response will be acknowledged in the published book. Thanks very much. Does anyone have any advice/experience with CosmoGirl or Jump? Is CosmoGirl similar to Cosmo? We would like to replace our skateboard mag, Thrasher, with a similar magazine, such as Transworld Skate. Is there a YA magazine that covers a wide range of Xtreme sports? I have done some searching on the Web and have accessed other public library magazine collections for YAs so I have some idea of what librarians are ordering for their YA collections. But I would love some additional info from anyone who wants to share their two cents! One more question, are there any new outstanding YA magazines that anyone would like to suggest? I have noticed that there are more and more "magalogs" out there...they are worrisome for me as I don't want to be ordering fancified catalogs for my collection. Thanks. We can announce it in the children's and staff areas only so that we don't disturb the quiet areas in the adult reading room. We welcome the child as a library user and announce that they recieved their first library card. We use first name only and tell the parent and child that we will do this so that they have a chance to ask us not to if it either feels uncomfortable for any reason. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Carol Leeson Head of Youth Services Mount Prospect Public Library 10 S. It would still cost more than your $4-5, but may be less expensive than books in braille.

A patron remembers a series of books that she read some 20 years ago. A boy and a set of twins (one boy, one girl) who travel to the seashore or an island to visit their grandparents in the summers. The books were mysteries and the patron remembers at least 3 titles in the series, maybe more. This rings no bells with me. If it sounds familar to you please email me @ mjenson-@glenpub.lib.az.us. As always I will post responces to the list. He thinks it was called "The Vortolk." The story is about a boy in summer camp who gets chased by bullies into the woods, where he finds a witch's cottage. She, (the witch) has no nose. She gives him some foul tasting soup. Subsequently, back at camp, whenever he gets wet he turns into an enormous frog and gets his revenge. The collection it appeared in was comprised entirely of scary stories, and the illustrations were similar to Steven Gammel's. Another story in the collection was entitled "Wendigo" although it wasn't the Native American folktale. Does this ring any bells? I've checked the Short Story Index with no luck. Please respond to me directly. Thanks.
