We are planning a teen photography contest at our library, and are trying to

come up with the wording of the rules and registration form. We would

really appreciate hearing from other libraries who have done this kind of

thing before.

Thanks a lot!

Subject: Pokemon Trading Card Day

Date: Tue, 6 Jun 2000 18:39:30 CDT

We've had great success with our Pokemon card exchange program since

January. Initially, there were about 150 kids attending, not counting

the parents. It has since dwindled to about 60 ( I'm not sure if it's

because the craze has ebbed or kids have other activities planned,

also). We have the kids trade cards in the children's room only. Rules

were typed and distributed to all traders such as:all trades are final;

no selling of cards; no blocking of exits; and to remember that they are

still in the library and to refrain from yelling, screaming, etc. We had

a staff member monitor the room from time to time. Trading was held from

6:30 p.m. to 8:00- closing.

Hope this helps in planning your program - good luck.

The program is held only once a month. Comments from parents were all

very positive. Good luck to you on your program.

Jennifer,

At our Pokemon trading day, we had tables set up on one side of our meeting

room for trading. On the other side of the meeting room, we had pokemon

crafts for younger brothers and sisters, and for those kids who got bored

with trading. We also had chairs set up around the room, as many parents

came with their children. Our trading time was only two hours long.

Yes, Irene! Any type of rocker rocks backwards on carpet or on a hard, smooth

floor surface. I considered making the underneath more abraded but doing this will

ruin carpet over time and possibly hard floor surface. The public likes the

rockers (both parents and children) so we have them on the floor. Thanks for

asking!

Greetings,

I wanted to thank everyone that replied to my message concerning interests of those that are teaching or are about to begin a toddler stroytime.

I will be doing an Internet Scavenger Hunt Day in the future and wanted to begin gathering sites for this activity. I knew I should consult PUBYAC community. So here goes......

Does anyone have any favorite Internet Scavenger Hunt sites for all grade levels. I want to find some that are fun as well as challenging and informative.

Thanks for your help in advance.

My library is trying to establish a teen volunteer

group. Does anyone have any experience they can pass

along? I am looking for a parent permission slip and

application form. Does anyone require parent

permission slips? We are hoping for kids 12 - 14

years.

Thanks for all your help!

Hi all,

The programs at the library where I work are held in

the basement meeting room, far away from the

children's department. Often, patrons will arrive

early for programs and not want to make the trek

upstairs to the children's department at that time.

When I do the toddler storytime, I provide board books

and picture books and turn that extra time into shared

reading time between caregiver and child. However,

now I will be doing summer programming for school age

kids and I am at a loss on how to entertain the early

birds. I will still provide books for them to read,

of course, but are there any other activities that I

could use to entertain the masses pre-program?

TIA,

Tracey Dittoe

Does anyone know a directory to reputable children's sports

camps, particularly basketball? I have a general camp directory

but need something more specific.

An internet keyword search yields lots of web pages, but nothing

to gauge quality. Encylopedia of Associations does not seem to

list any professional association for basketball camps. I tried

Slam magazine (for a camp roundup like Tennis does), but

nothing. By the way, the Clell Wade guides to sports camps are

apparently no longer published.

Jonathan Kozol, author of Ordinary Resurrections: Children in the Year of Hope, Amazing Grace: The Lives of Children and the Conscience of a Nation, and Savage Inequalities: Children in America's Schools, will speak at the joint program of the ALA Intellectual Freedom Committee, AAP Freedom to Read Committee, and American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression.

The program, "It's Our Bill of Rights, Too!: Children, the First Amendment, and America's Response to Violence," focuses on the backlash felt by young people in the wake of violent incidents such as the Columbine shootings. In an atmosphere of moral panic, our society seems to be viewing its young as potential assassins and responding by depriving them of basic First Amendment rights. Until now, no one has allowed children to speak to this situation or listened to what they have to say. At least one young person's first reaction post-Columbine was "What other rights will be taken from me now?"

In addition to Kozol, speaking at the program will be Henry Jenkins, director, Comparative Media Studies Program, Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Mark Guidetti, a high school junior from Cleveland whose horoscope column, written for the school newspaper a week after Columbine, earned him a 10-day suspension; and Kenneth Myers, the attorney who represented Mark in a successful lawsuit against the school district.

The program is scheduled for Monday, July 10, from 2 to 4 p.m. in the McCormick Convention Center, Room N227b.

Hello All,

The stumper about the "Rainbow Family" has been tickling my brain ever since

the question was asked. Of course, I have already deleted the stumper and

the reply so I do not have an individual e-mail to respond to. I'm sending

this to the list, in the hope the original poster sees it.

When the suggestion about the Doss book was rejected, my subconscious came

up with something I read about the black American singer Josephine Baker. I

did a little search and found that she adopted a bunch of interracial

children and called them her "Rainbow Tribe". Vaguely I remember that they

may have been abandoned children also. It might be an avenue to explore with

the patron.

Thanks to everyone who shared that the story of the little airplane going

over the Andes was a Disney Cartoon.(1942) And that it has been
