Their Grandmother had died and was being cremated. The father wanted to explain to his children what was happening to her. We couldn't find anything. Can anyone assist? Creativity seems to be the name of the game! This year we had a volunteer build us a "summer reading wheel." The wheel is divided into sections numbered 1-5, with other sections that say 2-for-1, Free Spin, Oops! Sorry!, and Go for the Gold. Each time a child reads and records 5 books on their book log, they get to spin the wheel. We have those stackable bins numbered 1-5 with a variety of prizes in them, which are progressively better, with 1 being smallest and 5 being best. If they're read 10, they spin twice, etc. It's been a big hit. Our registrations are up, the kids are reading more, and they love to spin that wheel. We put different prizes out every week or so to keep it interesting. Most of the stuff was donated, and my advisory board bought some things from OTC to round it out. This is in addition to the regular systemwide prizes of a paperback and plastic book bag when a child completes the program (10 books), "book bucks" at 25, 50, 75 and 100, which can be spent at the end of the program for new books. Our observation was that this delayed gratification did not inspire most children to keep reading, so we've added these small prizes and the excitement of spinning the wheel as a way to keep them going. It seems to be working. One last thing: when we did our SRC promotional visits, we wore foam clown noses as part of our gig. The kids loved them, so we promised clown noses to the first 70 kids who registered. The noses were gone in about 2 hours on our kickoff day!
