We say the kids cannot begin receiving prizes on the day they register. The only real back-talk we have had (and there hasn't been much) about this is the parents! When the kids register, they do get a coupon from a local hamburger chain just for registering, so they do get something (besides the joy of reading, of course!). This helps some with the record keeping, though not too much with the confusion (at least for the first 2-3 weeks when kids are really signing up hot and heavy). One reason I instituted this last year was because kids can count time or books with prizes for every five books or hours. Little kids can get five books in nothing flat; older kids counting hours don't have it so easy. We had situations where younger siblings were read at least 5 books before leaving the library while older sibs had to wait until they could read 5 hours.

We at Juneau Public Libraries made the decision two years ago to establish a

section in our libraries for Juvenile Illustrated Fiction (JIF). These books

are definitely picture books but whose concepts need a more mature reader

(listener) than the average picture book user. We do not put books that are

just long there if the maturity level is still 4-6 year-old. So Rose Blanche

is there. As is The Story of Jumping Mouse and Just Plain Fancy and The

Widow's Broom, but not Astrid Lindgren. We are very protective of this

collection. More and more writers (publishers) seem to be producing this

kind of book so we are grateful to have such a section. We find it very

popular with parents.

We received our Harry Potter books today (7/7) from Ingram. They were processed quickly and patrons will be notified tomorrow to pick them up.

Fairfax County Public Library (in Northern Virginia) has ordered 450 copies

for our 20 branches. The last time I checked, there were 1100 holds. But

it's been a few days so I am sure there are more now. I hope we get our

copies soon! I know there will be a great demand for them.

We have 70 copies of HP4 on order, with 567 holds. This exceeds our

purchase alert ratio of 4 holds per copy, but I doubt whether we can afford

to buy any more copies.

We still have signficant hold lists on HP2: 241 holds for 70 copies, and

HP3: 192 holds for 70 copies. We satisfied our holds for HP1 by buying

hundreds of copies of the paperback. We can't wait for the paperbacks of 2

and 3, with 2 rumoured to be out this fall.

I'm a school librarian-not a public librarian. But I just checked the Salt

Lake County Library System. This system has 18 branches. They have ordered

800 copies of the latest Harry Potter, and they currently have 2,149 holds on

it.

Here is their web pac:

http://www.slco.lib.ut.us/

I'm anxiously awaiting my personal copy of Goblet of Fire from Amazon arriving

via FedEx tomorrow. I've enjoyed the little tidbits that a few of you who have

already read #4 have been sharing.

We are a large urban library with 30+ branches.

There are 143 reserves and we have ordered 150 copies.

They haven't arrived at the branches yet, I don't know if they are in

Processing or not. We also ordered through Ingram.

Has anyone experienced a loss of readership due to the availability of

Hi Jackie, I did this activity and it was great, some

kids painted the fish and put it on the shirt those

who didn't want to touch the fish did it the other

way. My biggest difficulty was finding an intact fish

with the head and one that was not cut open.

Hopefully you can get one but call ahead.~vida

I haven't actually done fish prints, but for kids who might be allergic to

fish, like I am, you might provide the fish shaped sponges to use. Sponges

work excellently. They can be bought already shaped at craft stores or you

can buy the flat sponges, at craft stores, and cut them yourself. Just wet

them and they expand to full sponge size.

I know this doesn't answer about the fish-on-shirt or shirt-on-fish

question, but for fish-aphobic people, this might work! Good luck.

<< We shelve our picture books in strict alphabetical order by author's last name. It may take longer to shelve this way, but it is much easier to locate books. >>

I agree with you totally! We shelve ours the same way and it makes life easier for us in the long run. There is nothing more frustrating than trying to find a book and having to go through all the "S"s to do it.

I have a PS for the Left Behind discussion. As I mentioned earlier, I

haven't bought the Left Behind Kids series. A young patron (she's 8) asked

if we had them. When I said "No," she said,"Well, then, do you have

something else scary--like Goosebumps?"
