Kathy Welch ------------------------------ From: Vanston <jvanston@suffolk.lib.ny.us> To: pubyac listserv <pubyac@prairienet.org> Subject: Old Stumper solved! Creatures, book, vacuum MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Date: Tue, 18 Jul 2000 20:14:48 CDT I finally found the answer to a stumper I posted here a while back. I was looking for a book in which a child/children are in the study/library of a grandfather/uncle. They open a book, creatures pour out, and they have to vacuum up the creatures. The answer is...WHY ARE THERE MORE QUESTIONS THAN ANSWERS, GRANDAD? by Kenneth Mahood, 1974. The memory of it was a bit off. The boy, who asks endless questions, is locked in a junk-filled attic by his frustrated grandad, and is told to clean it. The boy finds a book, and opens it. When he comes to a picture of a parrot, he asks, "Can parrots really talk?" and the parrot zooms out the book and tries to help clean the attic by looking up "cleaning" in the book. They vacuum, but the vacuum sucks up EVERYTHING. More things and people are summoned from the book, but only make the problem worse. Finally, a magician is summoned, and he magically sets the attic to rights. When the grandad walks in and sees the perfect state of the attic, he is the one who starts asking all the questions, like "How?" and "Where did you get that parrot?" I am very pleased to have found it, and thought I'd post the answer for those who might have been curious (and in case anyone ever asks you for such a book!) Hope any of you who have differing lists will do the same. It will be great to have several to compare and contrast. Mine only includes books that we have here, so I know it is not complete. Also, it only includes J and JH, so any that are strictly YA will not appear. Hope this helps. The text that follows will appear to be in strange order. I cut and pasted from the bibliography (in Word) into this message and this is how it worked. +++++++++++++ Wizards, Witches, and Magic Spells If you like the Harry Potter books ... try one of these while you're waiting for the next one!!
