I heard about this mistake a couple of months ago, but sure didn't notice it
when I was reading it. Here's a link to an article about it - doesn't really
give any clues, though, to whether it was on purpose or really a mistake:

That's great. B&N is putting up some displays for Teen Read Week and
gets
lots of publicity (free advertising) that they don't need. When are we all
going to stop being so enamored of Barnes & Noble (and Amazon, et al.)?
What about some publicity for all that public libraries do for Teen Read
Week? How about hearing about the small independent bookstores that have
always led the way in fostering a love of reading?
Sorry for the tirade but as a former owner of a small independent
children's bookstore I am tired of hearing about the great job the
superstores and internet non-stores are doing to further reading. All they
have ever done is copy the best aspects of the small independents and put
them out of business.
They're big, they have lots of books but they are not doing
anything we
should be so enamored of!

Dear colleagues,
We have been receiving a free subscription to Youth Line USA newspaper
since June. Recently we had a patron objection to its distribution in the
Children's Department. Does anyone else receive this free weekly, have
you had objections to it? It is listed as receiving a Parent's Choice
recommendation and and Association of Educational Publishers Award-does
anyone know if these are valid endorsements?
I personally find nothing objectionable in its coverage and news and
photos are obtained from Reuters and AP. Is anyone aware of any agenda
this publication might have or have any other info or experience with it?
Any feedback you can give me will me greatly appreciated.

I noticed this too, but I chalked it up to dramatic license. After
all, I
think Harry wanted to see his mother even more than his father, and having
her come out last was a way to draw out the climax a bit. (And I don't
know
about you, but I cried during this scene, just a little bit. Of course,
Hallmark commercials make me cry...!) :)

Bill:
We are using _Learning Environments for Young Children: Rethinking Library
Spaces and Services_ by Sandra Feinberg, Joan F. Kuchner and Sari Feldman
(ALA, 1998) as our "benchmark" for services to children 8 years old
and
younger. This manual includes tools to help you evaluate your library's
physical environment, social environment, parent participation,
collaborations and networks, administration, and professional development as
it relates to services to young children. I believe San Fransico Public
used it recently to inform a proposal to improve services. Anyone out
there
from San Fransisco who can give us some details?
I am not aware of any similar _manual_ that does the same kind of thing for
middle and older children, but you'll probably find the document "Kids Need
Libraries" helpful. Prepared by Virginia H. Mathews, Judith G. Flum
and
Karen A. Whitney for the Second White House Conference on Library and
Information Science, it is an excellent values statement to help guide
visioning, priority setting and planning. It can be found on the web in
several places. Try http://www.cslnet.ctstateu.edu/kids.htm.
Also, refer to "Kids Can't Wait...Library Advocacy Now!" at
http://www.ala.org/pio/archives/nlw_97/tipsheet.html.
This includes a
number of nuggets useful for setting priorities and educating and persuading
those who need to be persuaded.
Best wishes!

I am currently preparing a 5 year development plan for our library's
services to children, parents and caregivers and would like to hear from
other public libraries, who have done the same recently or are in the
process of doing so, what you have identified or are identifying as
priorities, and perhaps the reasons why. Many thanks for you help.

Yes, I, too, wondered about this, but the second time through - I don't
think I noticed it the first time I read it. I think it's just a
mistake, but a minor one; it made sense that Harry's mother would appear
to him last because (it struck me this way, anyway) she felt like the
most important person to him spiritually/psychologically at that
juncture. OTOH, this also made me think that maybe Lily *did* get killed
before James. Do we ever learn definitively in what order Harry's
parents died? I thought maybe Rowling was presenting us with some new
information here, which is why it didn't worry me too much. Just a
thought -

I am tempted to weed the multivolume reference series, Something About the
Author. There are 113 volumes and they take up lots of precious space.
We
are getting the on-line database, Contemporary Authors, which includes lots
of children's authors. I RARELY see anyone use Something About the Author.
Any thoughts?

A patron came in today asking about a movie that came out several years ago
for children. It isn't animated, but is about a boy who goes into a library
and has a fantasy adventure. I was clueless. Any ideas?

Hi, all! I finally have a real stumper I can post to the list. Guess
I'm
officially a Children's Librarian now! :0)
Anywho, my patron is looking for a book her mom read when she was a child in
the 30's. The woman remembers reading it also. All she remembers is
that
it was about a fairy, whose name was Poppy, who lived in a flower. Not
much
to go on...
If anyone has any ideas, please e-mail me privately and I'll post the answer
when it comes in. TIA for putting your thinking caps on for us. Have
a
great weekend.

A patron is looking for a book that she read 7 years ago. She thought that
the title was Beauty or contained the word "beauty." She is
certain that it
is not Robin McKinley's Beauty, published in 1978. I also showed her a copy
of McKinley's Rose Daughter with no luck.
This is where the question becomes more complicated. The main character's
name is Ella, but by the end of the book, she is called Beauty. Ella also
has a wicked step-mother and step-sisters. Ella/Beauty also becomes
pregnant with step-father's baby?
The patron believes that the book is a YA title, and that it won a Newberry
or Newberry Honor award?
