Debbie--How about singing the following to the tune of "We Wish You a
Merry
Christmas"?:
We give you a brand new library card, we give you a brand new library
card,
we give you a brand new library card, and we hope you use it well!

Can anyone recommend some great nonfiction titles that would introduce =
to a 5 year old that there are various races/colors of children?
Thanks.

Subject: Stumper--Chinese mythological creatures
Date: Wed, 20 Sep 2000 23:07:44 CDT
A friend just returned from China (yes, I did, too, but this is Joanie's
stumper and I haven't had any luck with the few books on Chinese
folklore
and mythology in my collection) and while there she purchased two
statues of
mythological creatures. She had the sales person write out the English
name
for each and now she wants to know the stories behind them. I have not
seen
the statues but she describes them as:
Clerk said they were from the Qing Dynasty. First is called
ma-ta-fei-yan.
It is an elaborately decorated horse that is standing on what looks to
be
some kind of bird. Second is called gu-chan. It is a three-legged
frog-like creature and it has a coin in its mouth.
I know this is a stretch but somewhere, someone knows these stories. I
have
attempted a search on the internet using the names as spelled here with
hyphens, without hyphens, and without spaces and drew a blank on Hotbot,
Yahoo, and Google.
Thanks in advance for any and all clues you may have!

Subject: Good nonfiction titles
Date: Wed, 20 Sep 2000 23:12:58 CDT
Hi everyone,
In October, I'm going to be be giving a lecture to a Children's
Literature class at San Jose State University.
I'm going to be talking about the best in nonfiction for children up
through grade 8. I would appreciate any suggestions regarding series,
author, publisher, author/illustrator collaborations, and
author/photographer collaborations. My goal is to have good
representation of the dewey call number range.
I'm having fun collecting titles and I would love to hear ideas from my
peers. If you could share just one little nonfiction gem...please send
responses directly to me at jennifer.clacko@ci.sj.ca.us.
TIA,
