Hello, Pubyaccers ...

My friend Brad remebers a book he read as a child in Scotland 20 to 25
years ago.  It may have been a British book, might have been American -
not certain.  What he does recall is that there were creatures in the
woods that were very skinny - so skiny they could easily hide behind
trees.  They may or may not have been evil.  The main charachter was a boy
who had a stick OR wings that allowed him to fly, possibly with something
else.

Brad recalls this as a really great book - he would love to find it
again, although he is (justifiably) half-afraid to because he is worried
that it will lose some luster in the re-reading.

So ... any brilliant ideas?  I'd search for it in ref books or databases,
except I don't even know what keywords to start throwing out that would
even get me close.

Thanks for any leads you might be able to give me!

A patron has asked us to find a book which neither of the children's
librarians here, with combined experience of over 55 years, can identify.

He did not have a plot summary, but remembered
- reading it around 1970
- possibly a British publication
- character named Volka
- nuclear-powered suit and night vision, which seemed very novel at the
time

We have thought of John Christopher, but have not cracked the code. Any
ideas?
