We now use the term "movies" for the full-length entertainment videos, and
"videos" for the non-fiction and children's videos. The "movies" we charge
for and have a shorter check-out time, and they include children's movies;
the "videos" we treat like books, and are shelved with them (except for the
exceptions...). (At least we know what we mean, though we have to train the
patrons in our jargon, again.)

I am stumped on what activities to use with this story.  I'm really not sure

anything you can offer?  I have the book Straw Into Gold:  Books and

We have catalog access to the series, with titles being shelved under
author(s) in the juvenile fiction collection.  I referred this particular
title: Journal of Pendleton Collins to young adult fiction because of some
content.  Series is read by patrons.

Thanks to those who responded to my request for recommendations for a
good Spanish-language encyclopedia for junior high and high school
kids.

Everyone who responded said they use either Grolier's 'Nueva
Enciclopedia Cumbre,' published by Caribe Grolier, or the online
version, 'Cumbre Enciclopedia de Linea.'

The 'Enciclopedia Hispanica' published by Encyclopedia Britannica was
also recommended, for adults and older kids.

I appreciate the responses!  This list is great.

Subject: Little House mass market
MIME-Version: 1.0
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii
Date: Wed, 21 Mar 2001 21:31:06 CST

Okay, I'm not really looking to start a major
discussion here, but I feel the need to vent...

I grew up on the Little House books and just loved
them. When the "Chapter Book" series and picture book
versions came out I wasn't too upset because I thought
it was a good way to introduce younger children to the
books and they didn't really change the stories that
much. Many of them even used the Garth Williams
illustrations.

Then we had the "Rose" books...okay, maybe not as good
but still interesting--I always wondered what happened
to Rose and I'm smart enough to know they aren't as
"true" as the originals. Then the "Caroline"
books...starting to get a little far-fetched but still
interesting. Then the "Charlotte" books....

Okay, today I hold in my hand "The Far Side of the
Loch" from the new "Martha Years" series, Laura
Ingalls' GREAT-GRANDMOTHER!

Am I the only one out here that thinks enough is
enough? I'm sure these are fine books--I actually read
one of the "Rocky Ridge" books a couple years ago but
it annoys me that publishers are trying to make a
quick buck by taking advantage of an old classic. One
of the charms of the original stories was that they
were based on the true experiences of the author. By
comparison these are just crap. Perhaps it wouldn't
annoy me so much if they didn't advertise them all on
the backcovers as being one and the same. My first
thought that these series would lead kids to the
original books is now overshadowed by the concern that
kids won't even know the difference between these mass
market stories and the REAL Little House books.

I'm sure we'll keep buying them as long as they keep
checking out but it just depresses me that some of my
favorite historical fiction has been reduced to the
same caliber as Dear America.

It is not "Susannah" by Janet Hickman  or "The Gift of Sarah Barker"  by

too short to be informative. The patron read it to her son about 3 years

I have a patron who is looking for a series of books that she read as a
young adult. She's in her mid to late twenties now, so this really wasn't
that long ago. She remembers that the main character was a girl named
Sidney (sp?) and she thinks she was in high school and had some *nerdy*
friends who hacked into computers to solve crime. Her family may have been
special agents or something, as well. May have been a mild romance
developing.

It reminds me of the short-lived TV series, VR 5, which had a character
named Sidney. Does anyone know if this was ever a paperback book series? If
you do, know any authors? titles?

I have tried www.mcpl.lib.mo.us/readers/series/juv/, our library system

A patron could not remember the title or the author of a book  about a
little
red school house on a prarie. It is not the Laura Engles Wilder book "Little
house on the prairie."  If you have any ideas please let me know. We are
stumped here at pwl.
