Go Ask Alice

(Beats me why. I read this for the first time last year, and boy, is it WAY
over the top. A little less hyperventilating and it would have been a much
more believable story. But then, I'm not in the age group it was written
for.)

Others have mentioned witchcraft books. We've discovered that our
Encyclopedia of Witches and Witchcraft (I believe that's the title, but it
may not be exact) had several pictures and articles cut out. Many of our
books on the Salem witch trials never return, either.

Language tapes.

We've recently had a problem with music CD's. It started with the rock/pop
stuff, but I believe many of our classical music items have also
disappeared.

Two New Questions for the Collective Brain.......
Our five-year-old library is already outgrowing our space and, while
expansion plans are in the works, it's not going to happen overnight.   Too
much furniture was purchased for the building,  and every piece has a  small
metal plate on it indicating who the donor was.  The furniture is of
excellent quality (expensive) and people regularly come and examine "their"
family's item of furniture because they are proud of their contributions.
Personally, I find this very touching.
My director has asked me to post this and see if anyone else has had the
problem and what you  did....sell it, store it, what???    We also do not
wish to offend the purchasers of the furniture, either. Of course, we have
no
space to store it on site....sigh.......looking forward to your responses.

We were brainstorming at a meeting yesterday about space in the building and
were looking avidly at the space occupied by the back issues of our fairly
extensive magazine collection.  My director has also asked me to ask how
long
your libraries hold back issues of magazines, and how your library handles
the circulation of magazines, if they do.
At this point our magazines do not circulate (unless you count the ones that
disappear on their own) but we are considering a change in policy.  Are your
magazines catalogued?  How?  Do you put the magazines in any sort of holder
or pouch or something when they are checked out?  Any information will be
happily received.
And some random thoughts.  Unfortunately all my thoughts are random thoughts
this week...we have a hard time keeping foreign language material (the
learning of a foreign language, like Spanish or French) on the shelves.
Also
books about pregnancy and childbirth and continuing that theme, baby name
books.

And my last random thought befor getting my coffee--there was a STUMPER post
in the last week or so about WWII and kids going to an old house in England
and ghosts.  There's a small series written (I think ) in the 40's or 50's
by
an author whose last name was Boston.  Titles are something like "Treasure
of
Green Knowe" and I may be misspelling "Knowe".  I believe that they were out
of print for some time but I think I saw something in the last year or so
that they have been re-published.  It's been years since I read them, but
perhaps this is what the patron was looking for.

Dear Generous and all sharing ones,

Many times I have read with interest about Harry Potter parties.  Our
Friends group decided to host one ( I don't have to do a thing except be
there for the fun).  It is taking place after library hours in one weeks
time.  We now find ourselves in the middle of a mess.  I'm curious to know
what experiences others have had with anti Harry Potter groups.  We have
never had anyone contest the books ( until now).  It seems once the article
came out in the paper about the program we have been hit with hate mail and
people coming in to complain.  I must say that the host for the party is a
Presbyterian minister's wife and several members of their church are
volunteering to help.  Parents had to sign their children up for the event
and reservations filled up in 3 days.  Right now the program is still a go
but we have been informed that a formal complaint has been filed with the
mayor and we expect this to be a topic of concern at the next city council
meeting (4 days before the program).  I should say that our library is a
department of the city and that we are a small town of 35,000.  I can't
believe we would be an isolated case.  How about it? Care to share your
experiences?  Contact me, Belinda, at sakowski@grayson.edu  TIA

I really like the World Book as a good general encyclopedia.  It is
organized well, has a good index and usually has at least enough information
to get the person going with an idea or an assignment.

I am thinking about pulling all the "easy reader" or beginning chapter books
that newly independent readers (or their parents) ask for, and forming a
separate collection.  I know many of you already have this.  What I would
like
to know is what has worked best as far as how it is organized and labelled,
as well as the criteria for putting a book in that collection.  Your help
and
ideas are greatly appreciated!

Has anyone used LPT:One to help regulate patron printing and paying for =
same?  If so, could you share your experiences?

Also, Cybrarian was mentioned in a recent posting.  Would you be willing =
to share the good and the bad of this program.  One of my main concerns is =
what happens if someone resets the computer in the middle of a session.

Thanks for you input!

TIA

how does this circulation work in your library? we just put the newest one
on the shelf and then patrons have to ask for older issues, which can be
checked out. i guess what i'm asking is how do you determine how much they
are read? do they have to be checked out to be read?

i too would like to know how much different magazines are actually read. i
don't have a lot of experience with this.

Pubyaccers,

Even if these magazines are must-haves, do they check out well??  We have
about a dozen magazines but I have lately been looking at them
differently.  Many of them do not circ more than maybe 3-6 times a year.
It could be the way we merchandise them.  Please share with me info on
how well yours circ, and what magic number may persuade you to stop
subscription.

TIA

Hello,I'm a Library Trainee and soon
I'll be telling my first story to a class of pre-K kids. I'm horrified. I
work well with kids but I've never worked with them in a group. I have very
little experience with children and I don't know what to expect. Can someone
suggest a story that is sure to be a hit with them or give me some advice to
help calm my nerves. Thank you.
