I thoroughly enjoyed Aremis Fowl.  I read it in about 24 hours.  I think it
is very different than the Harry Potter series...  But an interesting read
and certainly something to add to the "While You're Waiting for the next
Harry"  book list.  I don't think you "have" to solve the code running along
the bottom.  It's gnommish.  Just makes the book more fun.
We have it classified as Y Fiction in our library system.

Shanla,
I agree that Artemis seems to be on the  road to over-hypedom...I think it
will appeal to middle schoolers, although certainly not to the extent that
Harry Potter captured the imagination....
I don't think we are going to need the multiple copies of this that we got
to meet the Harry Potter demand.
(I read review copy that did not have the code puzzle at the bottom of the
pages, but I think that would appeal to middle schoolers.)
In many ways I found the book disappointing; I thought it had the potential
to be much better than it was.

I got an advance copy from a friend who is a sales rep for Time Warner
Books.
He told me their plan was to push the book hard, releasing a huge run right
off
the bat, etc. etc.  The same with Cirque Du Freak by Darren Shan.  I enjoyed
Artemis Fowl, but it ain't no Harry Potter!  Nor is it on a par with Philip
Pullman's "His Dark Materials."  It struck me as good adult fantasy, which
is
to say that it is not as good as good juvenile fantasy.  I think kids may
ask
for it, and some of them will enjoy it.  It is a bit gory for kids under,
say,
9.  I think I will put it in Young Adult in this library. Oh, and did I
mention
that there are already plans to make it into a movie....?

I've read a few awful reviews of this book.  USA Today said it definitely
isn't
for children.  I don't plan to purchase it, but maybe our YA Dept. will if
we
get requests for it.

Hello PUBYACCERS:

I have a stumper for you.  A patron, 27 yrs old,
remembers this book from around 20 years ago.  A child
is given little mythical creatures called warm
fuzzies.  If he takes good care of them and gives some
away as the multiply, they will make him feel good.
But if he doesn't take care of them or does not give
them away, they turn into cold pricklies.

Thanks for the help.
